Position Summary:

This position performs clinical laboratory tests to detect and adequately treat metabolic and congenital defects in newborns, children, and adults as part of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics Program. In conjunction with other professionals in the program, this position assists with pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing, including reporting of screening test results. The position functions under general supervision and direction of the Chemist Supervisor.

The person in this position is expected to model and use the tools and principles of quality assurance in their daily work. This person must demonstrate exceptional professionalism by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with Directors, managers, supervisors, co- workers and all customers. The person must use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and the organization. Participation in continuous learning is expected. Continual learning through professional development activities is also encouraged.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Medical Technology or related field is required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Experience in a clinical laboratory or newborn screening laboratory is preferred. A minimum of three years to five years of working experience in a clinical laboratory is required for Chemist title. A minimum of three years to five years of working experience in mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and/or high performance liquid chromatography applications is required for Chemist title.

Hours for this position are M-F 8:30-5:00 p.m. Weekend and holiday work, on a rotating basis, is required.
