Head Men's & Women's Swimming Coach (720)



Summary/Objective

he Head Coach position is responsible in the entirety for all aspects of the Men's and Women's Varsity Swimming and Diving Teams. This includes athlete evaluation and recruiting, practice and competition organization, scheduling of competition, organizing and running all home competitions, media relations and various other obligations.

Essential Functions
  1. Coordinates a comprehensive Division I Swimming and Diving program to develop a quality program. This position represents the University at all conference coaches meetings. This position is responsible for developing a competitive meet schedule. This position arranges for and pays for all travel expenses for team competition. This position develops the season training plan, including daily practices covering stroke techniques development, basic endurance training, lactate tolerance training, race pacing, race strategy, relaxation, visualization, team building and strength training. This position arranges for the purchases of all necessary team equipment. This position directs and advises Assistant Coaches in all areas of the program. This position supervises all aspects of home competitions, including the meet entries, running of timing and scoreboard equipment, arrangement of the meet site and hiring and paying of all meet personnel.
  2. Responsible for directing all recruiting efforts of program including identifying needs each year and identifying potential swimmers to attract quality student-athletes to the program.
  3. Work with student-athlete academic support office in monitoring student-athletes’ progress in school to ensure academic progress, retention, and degree completion. Establish fundamental importance of academic success and its positive/integral relationship with success of the swimming and diving program. Serve as counselor/motivator for student-athletes to ensure all swimmers and divers serve as model representatives of the university.
  4. Responsible for program’s operation within NCAA rules. Responsible for working with compliance office to communicate with Admissions and Financial Aid Offices.
  5. Perform duties in conjunction with the offices of External Relations and Development as it relates to publicity, fundraising, and alumni relations for both the swimming and diving program and athletic department as a whole in order to promote the team and the university.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or Sports Management or equivalent education, training and experience
  • 3-5 years' experience directing a collegiate program or a club program with national level or international experience.
  • Knowledge of swimming and pool systems, operations and regulations required.
  • Knowledge of college athletic administration procedures and NCAA rules.
  • USA Swimming Membership

  • Program Management: Managing and implementing program activities including the development of objectives, action plans and timelines; developing, managing and evaluating program budgets, statements of work and proposals; coordination of efforts with other functional areas; conducting program studies to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of operations nd policies; recommending and implementing process improvement efforts and enhancements to program policies, standards, systems, and/or processes; training others on program components and best practices; responding to policy and program inquiries and information requests from internal and external sources.
  • Team Leadership: Effectively leads a team of employees which includes planning, coordinating, and monitoring the work of staff assigned on a project or program basis, providing technical guidance, coaching and feedback, and building effective work relationships.
