Staff Scientist in Immunology, Center for Translational Medicine

The Center for Translational Medicine seeks two (2) Staff Scientists to join our team. The person assigned to this position will join the lab of Dr. Jay Evans as part of an interactive multidisciplinary research team focused on the discovery and development of novel vaccines and immunomodulators in the Center for Translational Medicine at the University of Montana, Missoula MT. Our team works to develop vaccines or treatments for wide variety of diseases impacting human health including COVID-19, influenza virus, tuberculosis, pertussis, pseudomonas, MRSA, cancer, allergy, autoimmunity and opioid addition (https://youtu.be/VJymyraaxAI). We also seek to understand the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions and the downstream effects on immunopathology or immune mediated protection.

The person assigned to this position will join a world-class multidisciplinary vaccine research team that is well funded and has strong connections in both academia and industry. This position requires a highly motivated person with a strong working knowledge of immunology, molecular biology and cell biology laboratory techniques. Experience with animal handling and mouse models is strongly preferred. Candidates with experience performing ELISAs, flow cytometry, and cell culture are desirable. Molecular biology and microscopy experience is also a plus.

The person in this position will have the following responsibilities :

  • Works independently to design, execute and interpret results from experiments
  • Recognizes the need for and proactively improves assay protocols and analysis based on experience and improving technologies
  • Complete experiments with a high level of attention to detail
  • Assess priorities and work well under pressure; excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers and collaborators
  • Understand, analyze, and give clear verbal and written summaries of research results.
  • Effectively perform time management, task-prioritization and problem-solving functions
  • Follow all laboratory safety policies and procedures


The individual in this position is expected to be both highly independent and collaborative, and they will have significant leeway in the scope and design of projects. A key requirement is that the individual have the ability to see intellectually and technically complex projects through to their conclusion, which will involve developing methodological approaches and reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data and results from the project.





Position Details
  • Based on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications, the position may be hired at the assistant, associate, or scientist level.
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Starting salary for this position is $35,568 - $80,000, commensurate with qualifications.




Required qualifications and responsibilities for each level:

Research Assistant Scientist

  • Bachelor of Science and less than five (5) years of applicable lab experience.
  • Designs and executes a laboratory experiments with supervision.
  • Performs some data management and analysis.
  • Effectively communicates relevant scientific information to manager and colleagues.
  • Reviews scientific literature and recommends new technologies or ideas to colleagues or manager.


Research Associate Scientist

  • Bachelor of Science and greater than five (5) years of applicable lab experience or Master’s of Science and less than two (2) years lab experience.
  • Designs and executes a laboratory experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs data management and analysis with minimum oversight.
  • Effectively communicates relevant scientific information to manager and colleagues.
  • Reviews scientific literature and recommends new technologies or ideas to colleagues or manager.
  • Demonstrates competence with multiple laboratory systems and methods


Research Scientist

  • Bachelor of Science and greater than ten (10) years of applicable lab experience or Master’s of Science and less than five (5) years lab experience.
  • Designs and executes a wide range of experiments with minimal or no supervision.
  • Effectively reviews scientific literature independently and implements new technologies and assay systems into laboratory.
  • Performs complex data management and analysis with minimum oversight.
  • Prepares detailed verbal or written summaries of results with interpretation for manager and/or project teams.
  • Presents effectively at internal research group meetings.
  • Responsible for effectively sharing relevant scientific information with manager and colleagues.
  • Coordination of the efforts with technical and scientific staff to achieve project objectives and milestones.
  • Technical expert on one or more laboratory systems.


Senior Scientist

  • Bachelor of Science and greater than fifteen (15) years of applicable lab experience or Master’s of Science and greater than five (5) years lab experience.
  • Has theoretical, practical and technical scientific knowledge of an entry level Ph.D. scientist with exceptional technical competencies.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations in the laboratory including personnel and project management. Effectively manages laboratory technical staff.
  • Designs and executes a wide range of experiments independently and proactively incorporates new technologies into practice with minimal or no supervision.
  • Performs complex data management and analysis with minimum or no oversight.
  • Prepares detailed verbal or written summaries of results with interpretation for manager and/or project teams.
  • Writes specific technical sections of internal and external reports with limited supervision.
  • Assists in grant and manuscript writing with limited input from supervisor.
  • Presents effectively to internal and external meetings.
  • Responsible for sharing relevant scientific information from internal and external meetings with appropriate colleagues.
  • Established networking skills through interactions with scientists outside of primary project roles.
  • Initiates coordination of the efforts of technical and scientific staff to achieve project objectives, and milestones.
  • Trains incoming and/or junior scientists on instrumentation and methods
