Deputy Director for Projects
Columbia World Projects (“CWP”) is an initiative intended to better connect Columbia University with the world at-large where laws and policies are made, actions taken, and norms and attitudes shaped. CWP facilitates the application of academic work in the context of a broader, global discussion to address fundamental challenges in our home city, around the nation, and across the globe.
Reporting directly to the Columbia World Projects (CWP) Director, the Deputy Director for Projects is a member of the CWP Core Leadership Group (CLG) with direct responsibilities for the management of all aspects of CWP’s project portfolio including management of project-related internal and external consultations and negotiations, development of project portfolio strategies, development of project scopes, workplans and budgets, management and oversight of projects under implementation, and systems for project monitoring and evaluation, measurement of performance and reporting. The Deputy Director directly manages the convening of CWP Forums held several times annually to generate and refine ideas for projects to be considered and launched under CWP.
Project Portfolio Strategy and Project Planning
- Manages the cultivation of potential project ideas, working with internal University and external stakeholders.
- Assists in the prioritization of ideas for further development, taking into account consistency with CWP’s vision and mission and based on established criteria.
- Conceptualizes forums for discussion of potential project ideas, working to engage diverse stakeholders and ensures that all requirements associated with convening individual Forum meetings.
- Oversees publication of Forum reports and follow-up on engagements and consultations associated with potential projects that merit further development and consideration for support by CWP.
- Oversees the development of project workplans, protocols, budgets and launch.
- Implements projects and systems to monitor project performance including systems to detect and address emerging issues that may require course correction.
Project Monitoring, Evaluation, Performance Measurement and Reporting
- Leads negotiations and consultations with organizations and individuals responsible for CWP-funded projects in order to build strong relationships and successfully execute project agreements.
- Ensures that cutting-edge project management best practices are taken to scale to increase impact across projects and ensure successful achievement of project deliverables.
- Leads CWP-wide efforts to ensure proper monitoring of project workplans and budgets to ensure sound project and fiscal management and adherence to negotiated terms under project agreements.
- Collaborates with senior CWP staff to create and sustain high-performing, cross functional teams and to inspire staff to work collaboratively toward organizational mission and strategic goals.
Organizational Leadership and Development
- Actively contributes to CWP fundraising and development initiatives and campaigns to identify and realize opportunities for gifts and financial support in order to expand CWP’s reach and impact.
- Strengthens partnerships between the public, stakeholders, and key partners that support the mission and strategic direction of CWP.
- Collaborates with Research and Engagement component of CWP.
Performs other duties, as assigned.
- A Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Business Administration, International Affairs, International Development, or other related disciplines.
- A minimum of 15 years of experience in increasingly responsible positions within complex non-governmental organizations, academic institutions or the public and private sectors focused on health systems, economic or social development or public policy.
- Demonstrated experience in the development of RFPs, proposals, work plans, and budgets supporting the award and effective management of large, complex, multi-year projects focused on social, economic, political or scientific sectors.
- At least 10 years of experience as a senior manager with successful supervision and management of diverse staff teams in multi-cultural operating environments.
- Demonstrated experience in leading organizations operating in and through complex multi-stakeholder environments.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, to anticipate future consequences and trends, and to incorporate them into organizational planning processes.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to effectively lead teams and work through others to achieve results.
