Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the
Assistant Vice President/Dean of Students (AVP/Dean) provides
leadership focused on promoting student transformation by assisting
undergraduates to develop fully, realize their potential, and
achieve personal goals. This position is a key collaborator and
problem solver, working with students, faculty, and staff to
identify challenges or road blocks to student progress and to
understand concerns, explain policies and procedures, and work to
guide students towards resolution and a path forward. As a
strategic and hands-on leader, the AVP/Dean directs a team that
supports residence life, student engagement, new student
orientation and family programs, and student conduct.
The AVP/Dean leads institutional efforts in student behavioral
intervention crisis management, and ensures policies and protocols
are systematic, readily understood, and reflective of best national
practices.
The AVP/DOS is a member of the Emergency Management and Response
Team; will develop and lead a University CARE team; and serves as
an appeals hearing officer for conduct cases resulting in
suspension or dismissal.
A Master’s degree in student development, higher education administration, counseling, or a similar field with documented progressively responsible leadership and supervisory experience in Student Affairs is required. A strong record of administrative leadership, demonstrating analytical ability in assessing learning outcomes and evaluating programs; developing staff and strategic priorities; and building productive and collaborative working relationships across campus are required. Familiarity with best practices in areas in the Dean’s portfolio. Facility with current technology including use of social media, evidence of advanced interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to lead change.
