Social Media Manager

General summary/purpose:
The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) seeks an experienced and dynamic Social Media Manager to manage conversations and distribute valuable content across numerous social media platforms. Each year, AAP enrolls over 5,000 graduate professional students, both part-time and full-time, in more than 40 distinctive professional graduate degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, and non-credit courses. Over 77% of AAP’s enrollments are through the online programs, otherwise classes occur on campus, either in Washington, D.C., or Baltimore. AAP Marketing is also responsible for a significant summer and intersession portfolio of courses and programs offered at the pre-college and undergraduate level.


Each year, the Office of Summer and Intersession Programs (OSIP) enrolls more than 4,000 students.

AAP's Marketing and Communications division seeks to implement a vision that integrates and rebrands all marketing initiatives to highlight the value of its offerings and the success of its students. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, the Social Media Manager is responsible for developing a strategy for enhance the brand, engage the target audiences, and increase social media market presence and share for each AAP program across several platforms.

A successful Social Media Manager will build a robust network within Hopkins and across the higher education industry audience and will achieve strong engagement and outcomes in the following areas: developing content and the strategic management and posting of the same across social media sites to generate program inquiries, enrollments and alumni engagement.

This role will develop a strategic and sophisticated framework to establish and grow communities of distinct audiences across a variety of interactive and interconnected social media networks.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
30% - Strategic Planning
• Develop a long-term strategy for communicating through targeted social channels.
• Utilize data effectively when formulating digital content strategies across all online platforms.
• Establish metrics and also utilize social media analytics to monitor the effectiveness of the social strategy and media channels.
• Monitor trends in social media tools, applications, channels, design and strategy.
• Analyze campaigns and translate anecdotal or qualitative data into recommendations and plans for revising social media, content marketing, SEO, and social advertising campaigns.
• Measure the results of content marketing activity to inform future campaigns.

40% - Content Creation and Distribution
• Develop and maintain a posting calendar that aligns with the Institutions deadlines to achieve marketing objectives.
• Create, curate, and manage all published content (images, video, written, and audio/podcast).
• Align content to support a mix of prospective students, current students, and alumni.
• Maintaining an engaging and consistent voice that aligns well with the University brand.
• Design, create and manage promotions and social ad campaigns that integrate with AAP’s overall marketing campaign plan and channels.
• Implement SEO best practices.

30% - Conversation Monitoring and Response
• Monitor, listen, and respond to users in a “social” way while cultivating leads and continued enrollments.
• Maintaining an engaging and consistent voice that aligns well with the University brand.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
• Bachelor's degree in related field.
• Two years related experience.
• Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree, preferably in Marketing or related field.
• 3 years of relevant experience.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Highly effective communicator with an audience-first mindset.
• Demonstrated proficiency and creativity in the social media space.
• Strong social customer service techniques such as empathy, patience, advocacy and conflict resolution.
• Marketing knowledge and experience, particularly in the higher education sphere.
• Excellent writing and language skills.
• Highly collaborative.
• Strong technical understanding.
• Experience with online community building.
• Proficiency with Google Analytics, Sprout Social, and social media analytics.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
