The Department of Oncology seeks aResearch Technologistto work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or post-doctoral fellow as well as semi-independent work, is responsible for laboratory research using established procedures and protocols. The position requires a basic understanding of molecular techniques required to carry out laboratory experiments, the ability to apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and identify situations needing special attention.

The research focus of the laboratory is on the assembly and morphogenesis of herpesviruses. Using recombinant baculovirus technology to produce virus-like particles for structural studies and proteomic analysis. Creating recombinant viruses tagged with fluorescent reporters (GFP) to visualize in real-time virus particle movement within cells and in neurons. New projects also focus on development of protein microarrays using a virion display method for human transmembrane proteins. In addition, in conjunction with the Synthetic Biology team at JCVI we are synthetic biology methods to assemble the large genomes of herpesviruses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uses molecular biology methods (cloning, PCR assays, and mutagenesis), cell culture methods (transfections, virus infections, and cell line maintenance), biochemical procedures (protein electrophoresis, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, protein purification, protein microarray, and immunofluorescence), recombinant herpesvirus and baculovirus generation.
  • Applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects
  • Maintains accurate and current data records.
  • Organizes and records plasmid constructs and stocks.
  • Maintains freezer stock and supply inventory.
  • Responsible for maintenance of lab and equipment.
  • Identifies and trouble-shoots methods and experimental procedures.
  • Exercises independent judgment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Experience: Some related post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:

  • Western blotting, PCR, cell culture

Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:

  • Centrifuges, pH meter, analytical balance, pipettes, spectrophotometer, fluorometer, electrophoresis equipment, digital photography equipment, and DNA thermal cyclers.
  • General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office

Supervision of Others: Will supervise undergraduate students.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
