The Colgate Student Health Services provides convenient, high quality and cost effective care to a diverse group of students. Functioning as the primary care provider, Student Health Services offers routine medical care, women’s and men’s health, and mental health services, while also promoting wellness through health education. Student Health Services frequently partners with the University Counseling and Psychological Services and Shaw Wellness Institute to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Accountabilities

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is a member of the Student Health Services staff, working in collaboration with Counseling and Psychological Services, and reporting to the Medical Director of Student Health Services. This position works collaboratively with other members of the Student Health Services Team, Counseling and Psychological Services Staff and a consulting Psychiatrist in order to provide high quality mental health and psychiatric services to Colgate students. Practice is guided by protocols and standards set forth by the NYS Department of Education/Office of Professions and best evidence-based practices.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Provide effective and accurate care of patients;
• Provide mental health patient assessments, diagnosis, and treatment plans in accordance with the statutes, regulations, and protocols regulating the Profession (Scope of Practice, NYS Dept. of Education/Office of Professions);
• Provide psychiatric health services, education, counseling and related emotional support for students;
• Ensure practice is equitable and inclusive for all patients, which may require specific mental health outreach/education for marginalized student communities (first generation students, students of color, LBGTQ community, international students, etc.) to ensure equity and access;
• Refer patients for inpatient care or emergency services in collaboration with a consulting Psychiatrist, Medical Director and Counseling and Psychological Services staff as necessary;
• Collaborate with a Consulting Psychiatrist, Counseling and Psychological Services staff, local mental healthcare providers and student’s home providers, as needed;
• Issue prescriptions in accordance with treatment guidelines, NY State licensure requirements, and best evidence-based practices;
• Order laboratory tests, and interpret implications of the test results to the patient;
• Provide patient education regarding medications, risks, benefits, possible side effects and reasonable outcome expectations;
• Communicate effectively with patients and engage in follow-ups as needed;
• Follow policies and procedures, with respect to accurate documentation and releases to communicate student health information, to other providers, counselors, deans, parents or guardians, etc.;
• Participate in Department, Division and other campus meetings/events/projects; and
• May also provide primary medical care services as needed.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

• Current NYS licensure, DEA prescriptive privileges;
• A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in the field of Mental Health;
• Previous experience working with a diverse patient population, and with young adults/college-aged students;
• Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization capabilities;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills; and
• Must be committed to working collegially and networking with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff on a daily basis.

Preferred Qualifications Education

Mental Health (Psychiatric) Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
