The Director of Philanthropic Engagement Communications creates content, reviews/edits copy and creates design elements for all direct response efforts in Philanthropic Engagement, as well as the communication strategy for all giving societies. All creation is done in consultation with the University’s division of marketing. Reporting to the Executive Director, Philanthropic Engagement, the Director works in coordination with the entire Philanthropic Engagement team, assistant deans & unit executive directors, and other Advancement and External Affairs ( AEA ) department heads to steward and support the development of every major direct mail and email solicitation, as well as event invitations and external communications for the Fund for Syracuse, The Hill Society, The Lubin Society, and any future giving societies. This role will supervise the assistant director, direct response and future members of the unit.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
- 7-10 years of marketing, communications, project management and fundraising experience, preferably in the nonprofit or higher education domains.
- One or more years of supervisory experience.
- Deep industry knowledge of higher education annual giving.
- Knowledge and recent use of online giving platforms preferred, such as Anthology, GiveCampus, etc.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative software.
- Experience managing paid social campaigns from strategy, creative tests, analysis, etc.
- Proficiency in Windows-based applications, specifically Microsoft Office’s suite of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management tools.

Job Specific Qualifications

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, creativity, and demonstrated success in managing multiple projects. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
- Time management and prioritization skills are needed for daily operations.
- Expertise in communications from writing to creative with the ability to analyze results and make strategic business decisions based on those results.
- Experience with e-mail programs and web applications.
- Technical experience with Blackbaud CRM or equivalent CRM software
- Fundraising experience, particularly higher education annual giving.

Responsibilities

Manage, direct, and oversee all marketing collateral for Philanthropic Engagement including The Hill Society Impact Report & informational pieces, The Lubin Society solicitation pieces and collateral, copy & design strategy for all mailed solicitations (central and Fund for Syracuse ( FFS ) -focused school, college & unit pieces), and creating graphics and animated email imagery. Create alternate test vehicles for multiple campaigns each year to ensure the FFS is continuing to optimize creative, copy, and direct mail packaging with the goal of increasing alumni donor participation, renewing recent donors, and upgrading donors’ average gift amount.

Manage and implement the creative and stewardship strategy for all current and future giving societies, including The Hill Society and The Lubin Society. Work in partnership with the Executive Director of Donor Relations, to implement specific stewardship strategies as required. In consultation with the Data Analytics and Strategy team, provide strategies and execute upgrade solicitation mailings to move members of The Hill Society up to higher giving levels within the society. Manage the execution for all society newsletters, impact reports, and all other collateral materials.

Manage and direct the outbound communications and operations of annual initiatives such as: Giving Day, Make Your Mark (Fiscal Year End), #GivingCUSEday, Orange Central/ CBT Reunions, Forever Orange Week, Annual Campaigns, and Calendar solicit/thank you. Oversee and empower team members to plan new initiatives for solicitations, texting, crowdfunding, etc. Grow integration of direct response with Development Associate Team/Leadership Annual Giving, Telefund and other AEA colleagues.

Supervise, manage, and direct the Assistant Director, Direct Response. Provide, direction, strategy feedback, and mentorship for the Assistant Director’s campaigns and initiatives including crowdfunding, senior class & young alumni giving, and the Telefund program. Establish annual and long-range goals for the Assistant Director.

Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications and divisional teams to direct and lead the Fund for Syracuse as a “brand ambassador” to increase visibility for the Fund for Syracuse funds, their purpose, and the case statement of “why give?” to the alumni base through digital, direct mail, text, events, and social media. Create and report on general messaging/talking points to full OPE team to ensure messaging consistency across the team. Collaborate with Associate Director of Development, Philanthropic Engagement to provide messaging that helps their specific programs and is consistent with messages being sent more broadly.
