Job Summary

The Office for Outreach and Engagement (OOE) serves the entire CU Boulder campus, especially its faculty and staff members, by leading, supporting and publicizing high-quality outreach and engagement efforts. The Communications Manager supports office and campus outreach work by crafting communications and managing content using a multi-channel approach to target internal and external audiences. Reporting to the Director for Outreach and Engagement, the Communications Manager is primarily responsible for content development, project management, strategically communicating with outreach partners and the CU Boulder campus, and social media and digital engagement.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Content Development
  • In coordination with office and outreach O&E staff and faculty, create content for various communication channels, including websites, campus communication, newsletters, brochures, etc.
  • Develop content for outreach marketing materials, working closely with the graphic designer (Communications Assistant).
  • Provide public relations support for office events, using earned, owned, paid and social media.

Internal Communications
  • Provide outreach communications advice and/or support to faculty, programs, community partners and campus networks.
  • Amplify outreach stories through internal channels (event listings, campus communications, social media, etc.) through coordination with other campus communicators and Strategic Relations.

External Communications, Social Media and Digital Engagement
  • Manage office websites, social media and other digital engagement.
  • Use targeted emails, social media and other communication channels in coordination with campus and community partners to share outreach stories, projects and events with the general public and communities around the state.
  • In addition to utilizing current technologies, investigate and incorporate new methods and tools to complement existing communications efforts and evaluate effectiveness.

Management and Other Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage workflow for part-time Communications Assistant.
  • Track and report regularly to the Director on communications budget.
  • Represent office interests on-campus communications committees.
  • Engage in relevant professional development activities and training.
  • Participate in office and division meetings and activities.


What You Should Know

This position will be expected to be on campus depending on the university and department guidelines.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000.
Relocation is available if not local.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field and two years of professional experience in writing and social media.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • Experience with websites, social media and other digital engagement tools.


What You Will Need

  • Ability to set and meet deadlines, track project progress and communicate scheduling challenges.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Understanding of graphic design, targeted email marketing and web content and design.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work constructively with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize information in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal, creative and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of AP style.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Project management experience including the ability to set and meet deadlines and track project progress, communicating scheduling challenges during project management.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing workflow.
  • Experience with communications of higher education, especially university outreach.
  • Experience participating effectively in partnerships or collaborative networks.
  • Familiarity with CU Boulder and/or the CU System.
  • Knowledge of Web Express, WordPress or other CMS systems.
