Job Summary

Reporting to the Development Manager in the Software Engineering group, this position utilizes best practices in software engineering to serve as a resource to more junior developers in resolving more complex issues. As a senior software engineer, this position will be designing software systems that integrate with other systems, developed in-house, SaaS services, and 3rd party vendor applications. The position identifies the simplest solution that will solve the problem and that utilizes existing services from CU IT.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Software Development:
  • Prototype new platforms, frameworks, and libraries.
  • Evaluate and recommend software for use at CU by OIT.
  • Design new systems with the best technology practice available today.
  • Revisit existing design of legacy applications and find a creative way to make it sustainable, which includes the opportunity to change the approach.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to other developers and engineers.
  • Provide input on coding standards.
  • Participate in Agile development team.
  • Work with QA, UX, and Platform Engineering team on process and workflow.
  • Continue to improve processes such as version control, issue tracking, artifact management, standardization, etc.

Professional Development:
  • This position will maintain professional expertise in software design and architecture by actively learning from available resources and attending seminars, training sessions, and conferences. This position will identify and elect relevant training opportunities that would be most beneficial to the organization and to keep his/her skills up-to-date.

  • Possibility of primarily remote work with occasional visits to Boulder office.


What We Can Offer
  • Salary range for the Senior position is $90,000 to $110,000.
  • Salary range for the Principal role is $105,000 to $125,000.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
    • A combination of education and or relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • The Senior role requires 4+ years of experience in software engineering and leading complex, multiple technologies and hands-on software development experience. The Principal role requires 5+ years of appropriate skills and relevant experience.

What We Would Like You To Have

Technical Skills:
  • Event-driven architecture.
  • API design - RESTful Services.
  • Java.
  • Javascript using any popular Javascript framework, such as Angular, React, Vue, or node.js.
  • Web Application Development.
  • Automated Unit Testing.
  • Test-driven development.
  • Agile methodologies.
  • Source code control, such as git.
  • CI/CD.
  • SQL database -- i.e., Oracle, MySQL, or others.

Also Helpful:
  • Familiarity with OpenAPI specification.
  • Amazon Web Services, or other cloud technology.
  • Docker, or other container technology.
  • Working knowledge of domain-driven design.
