Position: Vice President of Finance and Operations

Position Summary: Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President of Finance and Operations is responsible for the leadership and oversight of fiscal and operational effectiveness of the school. Advise the President and Board of Directors on the matters of financial and strategic planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, allocation of resources, policies, and business-related operations of the school. Manage the business office, human resources, facilities, technology, transportation and food services. Serve as a member of the senior leadership team and finance committee. Supports the Catholic, Holy Cross mission and philosophy of the school.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and direct the financial affairs of the school; develop and implement budgetary policies and practices; establish and monitor internal accounting control procedures.
  • Conducts financial modeling/analysis for long-term financial planning and for evaluating and advising on the impact of long-range plans/new programs/strategies.
  • Oversee compliance filings and public information requirements; serve as school’s steward of 501(c)3.
  • Coordinate cash flow monitoring and monthly reconciliation of records with Institutional Advancement Office for both annual and capital programs.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Advancement Office on the financial assistance needs for all students.
  • Participates in the Hoban Trust Fund Board meetings. With Institutional Advancement Office, maintains and updates records of endowments in the Hoban Trust Fund including processing deposits and withdrawals.
  • Manage financial accountabilities and control of the tuition assistance and scholarship programs.
  • Applies effective internal controls and financial due diligence to ensure accurate reporting, safeguarding of assets, and compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and contracts.
  • Monitors spending needs and expenditures associated with technological, facilities construction and renovations, and food service operations to ensure compliance with approved budget.
  • Directly oversee, through subordinate staff, the processing of financial documents, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger entries, internal allocations, payroll and benefits processing, Hoban Store operations, petty cash fund, tuition procedures, bank deposits, transfers, loans and account management.
  • Ensure tax filings are prepared and filed on a timely basis.
  • Interfaces with auditors for compliance and reporting.

 Qualifications & Special Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting/finance, or related field.
  • Proven senior leadership experience in accounting/finance, or an equivalent field. Private, non-profit, and/or educational institution financial management experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in operational and strategic planning, organizational management, budget development, expenditure monitoring, and staff management and mentorship. 
  • Excellent proficiency and creativity in oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, laws, and regulations governing non-profits.
  • Ability to assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions that are timely and in the best interests of the school.
  • Ability to establish cooperative, tactful, effective, and harmonious working relationships with a diverse group of individuals, ranging from senior leadership, school administration, board members, faculty, staff, volunteers, and the general public. Use discretion and tact when responding to sensitive matters or situations.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs for accounting, databases, and spreadsheets.
