Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Massey Cancer Center ( MCC ) is seeking experienced candidates to oversee all MCC’s space and laboratories. The Lab and Operations Supervisor will play an integral role in developing and maintaining a system to effectively manage laboratory equipment. This system will cover the equipment throughout its lifecycle from installation qualification, to managing preventative maintenance and calibrations, to overseeing unplanned maintenance activities. This position is also responsible for maintaining facilities, inventory maintenance, and conducting safety training for end users. This position will interact on a regular basis with: Students, faculty, staff and internal and external visitors.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
-Ability to change direction quickly and multi-task with consistent follow through.
-Excellent communication skills with all levels of internal and external customers including vendors.
-Experience in customer service techniques and the demonstrated ability to listen to customer needs and also to implement/convey action plans to a diverse population.
-Working knowledge of biomedical research laboratories.
-Knowledge of state and university procurement rules and regulations.
-Working knowledge of building maintenance and repairs; mechanical aptitude; general carpentry and general trades knowledge and “hands-on” ability.
-Strong listening skills to interpret information correctly/timely and to accommodate the needs with a utilitarian approach, as well as the ability to tactfully convey requirements for service.
-Ability to anticipate and implement changes; to develop and implement a plan for continued maintenance of physical plant and equipment; to lift 50 pounds (moving furniture, temporary room dividers, paper, etc); to assist in the coordination of a large facility and grounds program.
-Ability to work independently and work proactively with members of the Administrative Team.
-Ability to drive state-owned vehicles as assigned; valid driver’s license required.
-BS in mechanical/electrical engineering, architecture, facilities planning or business, or related field, or equivalent experience required.
-Seasoned employee with progressive related work experience required
- Must be able tolerate the sight of body fluids/tissues as well as unpleasant odors of various specimens and chemicals

Preferred Hiring Standards

-Knowledge of FMS and space inventory system desirable.
-Working knowledge of facilities management practices and the management of physical assets and ability to understand and communicate effectively with facility maintenance personnel regarding Cancer Center work orders.
- Bachelor’s degree in one of the basic sciences or other related field.
-Three years experience in laboratory operations, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
