Job Summary

The director for professional advising is responsible for managing the university’s professional advising program and staff.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Oversees all functions, including advising and process flow, of the Professional Academic Advising system
  • Offers high-quality service during all advising phases, including prospective/initial enrollment, full matriculation and degree application
  • Establishes and maintains an academic advising program that supports student success by improving retention, persistence and graduation rates among traditional, post-traditional and online students
  • Serves as lion life coach for online students and advises online students
  • Assesses actions to outcomes in support of achieving student retention and completion goals
  • Implements advising software and trains colleagues on its functionality
  • Manages the degree plan process and remains knowledgeable of catalog and degree requirements and changes
  • Identifies barriers in the degree planning and advising processes and problem solves for solutions
  • Coordinates with academic departments and leaders to assure accurate advising
  • Coordinates with deans and academic leaders to assure integration of academic advisors into academic colleges
  • Collaborates with the Center for Experiential Learning for best practices when advising students related to co-curricular experiences


Leadership and Strategic Thinking

  • Supports the mission of the university and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Strategizes and plans with university stakeholders and academic leaders to develop policies and operational procedures to support effective advising to completion practices
  • Manages professional staff advising through programmatic initiatives and targeted advising support for higher risk populations
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive advising structure that aligns with the institution’s strategic plan and retention goals
  • Establishes long- and short-term strategic goals based on assessment data, ensuring standards for the department and its field are met or exceeded
  • Adapts and modifies leadership based on new information and/or data, utilizing effective strategies for collaboration
  • Aligns division/department purpose and actions with university initiatives and higher education trends


Employee Management and Development

  • Models, supports and holds others accountable to the university’s values – integrity, dedication, excellence, creativity and teamwork
  • Recruits, interviews, recommends, hires, trains, supervises and monitors performance of professional advising staff
  • Sets clear performance expectations and holds employees accountable
  • Conducts thorough and timely performance evaluations based on evidence, observation and feedback

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience in a higher education setting, with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience
  • Demonstrated record of progressive professional responsibility, including supervisory or leadership experience preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Mastery of the articulation and equivalency process
  • Experience with and knowledge of student information system (SIS) functionality
