Senior Opportunity to Increase US-Indonesia International Education Exchanges through Expanded Indonesian Graduate Study in the United States

The United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) seeks a creative, motivated person with strong qualifications in international education for a full-time position in a new USAID-funded project that has high potential to increase the number of Indonesians undertaking graduate study in the United States.

As the students are fully funded by the Indonesian government, and welcomed by U.S. universities, the essence of this position is connecting Indonesian students with the many U.S. universities seeking them, and motivating and preparing them to apply and be admitted to appropriate U.S. universities. The incumbent will collaborate with the Indonesian government scholarship agency (“LPDP”) USINDO, and other project personnel.

This is an exciting opportunity for a person who believes in international education, likes results, operates well cross-culturally, and has the right experience, passion, and talent to make things happen. The ingredients for success exist and need the right person to bring about the achievable results. The position is based in Jakarta Indonesia (although frequent travel to Jakarta can be considered) and would begin about late 2021. However, the project proposal is due now.

Our candidate can be either a U.S. or Indonesian national, or perhaps a third-country national. The position receives oversight and support from USINDO’s leadership in Washington and Jakarta. The incumbent is assisted by a part -time person in the U.S. for liaison with U.S. universities.

Project and Position Description

Indonesia has a huge (US$5 billion) education studies endowment fund, “LPDP”, which provides Indonesians with full scholarships and expenses for graduate studies abroad at a list of designated universities. However only 8% of the Indonesian scholarship awardees study at U.S. universities. USINDO and many others believe it should be 15%-20%. U.S. universities greatly welcome qualified, fully funded graduate students. USAID’s TEMAN LPDP’s project goal is to use these favorable circumstances to increase the number of LPDP scholarship awardees studying in the U.S.

We need a person passionately interested in international education to join our bid for this project as Technical Lead – Scholarship Management. The role is to devise and implement plans to enable LPDP to increase its awarded scholarships to the U.S.

The incumbent will formulate and implement a recruitment strategy including determining existing constraints, extending outreach about the U.S. scholarship opportunity and U.S. interest, utilizing available new programs of student preparation in the project, all to yield a greater rate of US study and the capacity for its continuation.

The position will work under the supervision of USINDO, and USINDO will work in collaboration with the Project Chief of Party.

Minimum Qualifications

• MA in education or a BA with significant work experience in international education.
• At least five years of progressively responsible relevant work experience in identifying and preparing participants for US study and placement. Two of these five years should ideally be in a managerial or team leader capacity.
• Able (with help from a US-based employee) to identify the best matched universities for participants taking into consideration of field of study, university requirements, university size, participant’s background.
• Knowledgeable in outreach strategies, including both in general and in recruiting applicants from remote and disadvantaged areas.
• Knowledge of requirements of U.S. universities for graduate school admissions
• Ability to work collegially and productively.
• Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written, to fulfill the technical responsibilities.
• Strong English writing, speaking, and intercultural skills.
• Willing to relocate to Jakarta, Indonesia or high flexibility for frequent travel.
