Department Summary
The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is a research institute that reports to the Vice President for Research and Innovation. We are a growing institute with 21 labs and about 150 employees, including over 45 graduate students that train in our labs. We have an administrative structure which includes accounting, personnel, PI support, building management, and three service centers. Our annual budget is primarily from federal research and training grants.

Position Summary
The Buyer provides purchasing support to IMB researchers working in 21 labs and specialized facilities, including purchasing, receiving, and redistribution assistance. This position will conduct vendor and product research and the writing and review of detailed bid specifications. Additional responsibilities include receiving verbal, written, and email requests from research labs and offices purchasing large quantities of scientific equipment, lab supplies, and office supplies; resolving shipping, receiving, and billing discrepancies with vendors; negotiating reshipments, returns, and credits; and moving materials between labs, loading docks, or storage areas.

Minimum Requirements
  • Three years of purchasing experience which must include using purchasing practices, procedures, and techniques such as determining specifications, placing purchase orders, and processing requisitions;
    AND
  • A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a closely-related field or three more years of relevant experience.

    Professional Competencies
  • Ability to provide superior customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office software, and familiarity with PC and Mac operating systems.
  • Ability to prioritize workload while maintaining accuracy; ability to work under tight deadlines with competing priorities and frequent interruptions.
