DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC has more than 2 million alumni living and working around the globe. They are leaders and contributors to the vitality of our communities, our businesses and our culture. The mission of the UCOP Alumni Engagement office is to enrich the lives of UC alumni and engage them as volunteers, advocates and contributors who strengthen the University of California. Working in coordination with the campus alumni offices, UCOP Alumni Engagement develops systemwide alumni programming that highlights and enhances campus-based efforts, facilitates the sharing of best practices, harnesses the collective power of UC alumni as UC advocates, and supports the work of the Alumni Associations of UC (AAUC).

POSITION SUMMARY

The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) seeks a collaborative, creative, and enthusiastic professional to lead systemwide programs for alumni engagement, cultivation, support, and advocacy in partnership with campus alumni associations and advancement offices. The Director, Systemwide Alumni Engagement partners with the Chief Alumni Officers at UC's 10 campuses and UCOP colleagues to develop and execute strategic initiatives and programs that serve UC alumni and further institutional goals of building greater affinity and support for the university among UC's more than 2 million living alumni. This role operates within the UCOP External Relations and Communications Division (ER&C).

Responsibilities

Systemwide Alumni Programming: Collaborate with campus and UCOP colleagues to plan, execute and publicize systemwide alumni programming that builds upon campus alumni engagement efforts, such as the UC Alumni Career Network webinar series. Conduct ongoing assessment and analysis of alumni needs; develop and execute new, systemwide programming to support UC alumni, demonstrate UC's commitment to its graduates, and enhance networking and relationship-building efforts, including with diverse alumni groups nationally and internationally. Maintain productive working relationships with alumni relations staff at UC's 10 campuses, and foster opportunities for resource and information sharing across the UC system. Provide expertise and advice to UC campus and UCOP colleagues on UC policies and practices related to alumni activities and engagement. Support campus efforts to organize meetings of the Alumni Associations of UC (AAUC) and/or other systemwide alumni engagement meetings. Produce and distribute alumni-facing communications, as needed, and ensure the alumni voice is represented at the systemwide level. Engage and consult with department leadership across the Office of the President to provide advice and address alumni engagement and access.

Alumni Advocacy: In collaboration with Alumni Regents, ER&C colleagues, and campus colleagues, develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to engage more alumni in university advocacy efforts on state and federal issues, such as public funding for UC and other institutional priorities. Support opportunities for information-sharing and collaboration between UCOP State and Federal Governmental Relations, campus alumni associations, systemwide alumni constituency groups, and the Alumni Associations of UC (AAUC).

Serve as UC Alumni Regent Staff Liaison: Provide programmatic support, as needed, for the University's Alumni Regents; collaborate with UCOP and UC campus colleagues to execute on these Regents' priorities, to the extent possible. Manage materials related to Alumni Regent rotations, selection, and onboarding best practices; coordinate AAUC orientation and onboarding of new Alumni Regents; support their leadership roles as the Officers of the systemwide Alumni Associations of UC (AAUC). Maintain a strong working relationship with the Office of the Secretary and Chief of Staff to the Regents.

Office of the President Alumni Engagement and Cultivation: In collaboration with campus colleagues and the UCOP Executive Communications and Engagement team, develop and execute alumni engagement opportunities for the President of the University of California. Prepare, brief, and staff the UC President at such engagements, as needed. Keep UCOP and ER&C leadership informed on alumni needs and key issues. Maintain accurate records of alumni engagement activities and participants. Produce impact and engagement reports, as needed. Monitor and manage responses to messages in the UC alumni email inbox. Manage the alumni engagement office budget in coordination with the ER&C Business Operations Director. Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of work experience in alumni relations, community engagement, constituent engagement, or related field, preferably at the University of California or commensurate institution.
  • Solid experience in building relationships with internal and external partners, and developing and executing programs to support those partners; proven ability to work as part of a collaborative team, managing multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, plan, and execute meetings and events with strategic impact.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to present to large groups.
  • Detail-oriented and efficient; strong project-management skills and ability to work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Experience handling sensitive information and solving problems tactfully and creatively; ability to advise on protocol issues, as needed.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, virtual meeting software such as Zoom, data/marketing management tools such as MailChimp, constituent identification tools such as LinkedIn, and survey tools such as SurveyMonkey or Alchemer.
  • Self-starter requiring little direction or supervision for day-to-day work.
  • Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, such as Salesforce or Blackbaud. Experience with writing contact reports and stewardship plans.
  • Experience working with members of a governing board.
  • Ability to navigate complex organizational structures and secure credibility and trust with alumni, donors and other dignitaries.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the University of California system, its mission, structure, goals, and programs, as well as with the higher education sector as a whole.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: $95,000 - $110,800 to start, commensurate with experience.
