Biology Part-time Lab Technician - Framingham State University

The part-time Laboratory Technician is responsible for assisting the full-time Laboratory Technician with specific aspects of the department's instructional materials. The part-time Lab Technician, in consultation with the department chairperson, the full-time laboratory technician and the faculty assists the full-time laboratory technician with the duties of preparing and setting up multi-section laboratory courses as well as maintaining the setup for each lab section performing a given lab by checking and restocking where necessary consumables, reagents and equipment, washing lab-ware and maintaining supply inventories. This person will assist with maintenance of live specimens (plant and animal) for the department. The part-time Laboratory Technician is also responsible for effectively communicating with others for the coordination of equipment use and supply ordering.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology or other related field; equivalent scientific experience or academic credentials will be considered.
• Demonstrated aptitude for operation, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment typically found in Biology laboratories.
• Basic computer skills including the use of the Microsoft Office Suite. Good problem solving skills, analytic ability, organizational skills and written and oral communications skills. Ability to identify needed action without direction.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals and by examining records and documents.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to prepare and use charts, graphs and tables on a computer.
• Ability to perform arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication).
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral expressions and in writing.
• Ability to establish harmonious working relationships with others.
• Ability to deal tactfully with others.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment.
• Ability to work in a team setting.
• Ability to distinguish colors visually.

• Ability to accurately prepare solutions of specified concentrations from available stock chemicals.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of the proper methods used in the disposal of laboratory materials.
• Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of chemicals, acids and materials used in a laboratory.
• Working knowledge of chemical hygiene plans.

This is a part-time non-benefited, contract position, not to exceed 18 hours per week.
