General summary/purpose:

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Financial Analyst participates in studies to improve the operational and financial effectiveness of Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). The Financial Analyst extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems, performs financial and cost accounting analysis of data, and utilizes knowledge of the university's financial accounting systems.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Assists in the analysis of financial data and extracts and defines relevant information; interprets data to determine past financial performance and/or to project financial probability.
  • Reviews expenditures and performs cost benefit analysis related to projects and/or programs.
  • Performs statistical, and financial analysis of data reported across various financial systems.
  • Reconciles revenue between SAP and JHTV’s internal Inteum database to ensure all income is accounted for and recognized.
  • Manages project activity for various quarterly and annual reporting deliverables- assigns sections and deadlines, reviews reports, and meets with management for final review.
  • Develops financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
  • Develops analytical tools to facilitate the management of JHTV’s portfolio, staff, and operations.
  • Based on analytical findings, provides recommendations to JHTV senior staff.
  • Regularly prepares presentations -for senior management team meetings.
  • Designs and administers complex analytical tools in BI platforms such as Tableau, PowerBI, and Qlik.
  • Extracts, manipulates, and performs quantitative analysis on large data sets.
  • In collaboration with IT, leads the development and maintenance of proprietary data systems necessary for office operations.
  • Analyzes the structure of intellectual property landscapes to develop an understanding of important organizations and trends in specific industries. Over time, this position will develop an understanding of certain key industries relevant to the commercialization of major IP portfolios managed by JHTV.
  • Identifies obligations incurred through funding sources, material transfer agreements, and other agreements that may impact the ability of JHTV to license the technology.
  • Accounts for and summarizes JHTV’s financial activity in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Assists with the compilation of revenue and expenditure data related to license agreements and, following JHU and Inter-Institutional IP policy, calculates and processes royalty distributions to other institutions, inventors, inventors’ lab(s), inventors’ department(s), inventors’ school(s), JHTT, and JHU.
  • Develops narrative and statistical reports and charts in response to management requests regarding overall licensee compliance, specific agreement compliance, and technology portfolio analysis.
  • Updates the stock escrow/equity holdings in the JHTT information system; generates appropriate documents to transmit stock to the Treasurer's Office and provides reports from the database as needed.
  • Interprets and performs financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Prepares detailed and summarized written analyses for JHTV and University management.
  • Supports pre- and post-award administration of JHTV’s sponsored research activity.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or related field
  • Three years’ related financial experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or word processing

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident required due to Federal Export Controls
  • Advanced knowledge of financial software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or word processing to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports
  • Specific experience with Microsoft products: Excel, Powerpoint, Word and Access
  • Work experience in a research, academic or university environment, and strong knowledge of SAP and BW reporting
  • Proficiency in COEUS and JAWS systems
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and meet deadlines and to multi-task under pressure
  • Good oral and written communication skills including the ability to draft emails and letters, budget narratives, and other reports using excellent form, style, grammar, and spelling
  • Great interpersonal skills and strong solution-focused customer service orientation with a proven ability to promptly deal professionally, tactfully, and effectively with all types of customers
  • Skill in planning, preparation, and analysis of financial statements, budgets, and financial trends, to include GAAP operating and cash activity
  • Experience with financial analysis techniques, including financial evaluation of performance metrics and scenario modeling
  • Demonstrated skill in financial and budget analysis; ability to develop financial models
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A team player who collaborates well and able to work with diverse audiences

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
