General Summary/Purpose:

The DNA Diagnostic Lab (DDL) at Johns Hopkins Medicine is committed to offering state of the art molecular testing for a wide array of inherited disorders. The lab is part of Johns Hopkins Genomics, a partnership between the Institute of Genetic Medicine (IGM) and the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins. JH Genomics serves as the clinical diagnostic facility for molecular genetics and genomics across Johns Hopkins Medicine. The DDL is a leader in the application of DNA sequence analysis to clinical diagnostics and continues to acquire new technologies to remain at the forefront of the molecular diagnostics field. The lab receives samples for testing from health providers within Johns Hopkins and from across the nation and the world.

The Molecular Diagnostics Technologist performs both wet bench work and analysis of complex genomic data. The technologist analyzes molecular data obtained using a variety of techniques for clinical reporting, and maintains a database of characterized Next Generation Sequencing variants for internal reference and public databases. The technologist will be immersed in all stages of lab flow and will be trained in multiple clinical techniques.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs data analysis for next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing, and Fragment analysis.
  • Assists in the process of variant classification of DNA variants identified during clinical testing.
  • Performs bench top protocols on clinical samples and maintains competency in assigned technical protocols. Annual competency testing is required for all clinical technologists.
  • Conducts quality control reviews and data review backup.
  • Attends weekly lab meetings.
  • Disseminates important information regarding lab flow and equipment maintenance.
  • Works in a collegial manner with all staff members.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques and data analysis.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
