Director Recruitment

General summary/purpose:

The Director of Recruitment provides forward-looking leadership and effective management for the recruitment team at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Reporting to the Executive Director of Admissions, the incumbent serves as part of the senior leadership team within the Office of Admissions helping to set strategic direction.

The Director of Recruitment is responsible for leading a team of high performing Admissions Officers, assisting in the development of the Carey Business School’s admissions and recruitment strategy in the national and international marketplace. The Director supports the school’s goals related to student quantity and quality for all full-time and part-time degree programs, with special responsibility for the full time MBA program.

The Director will be responsible for development, implementation, and oversight of an internal inbound/outbound call center to manage enrollment related questions from prospective and incoming students. Responsibilities include developing operational requirements, establishing processes, advising on technology needs, staffing, and setting goals and standards for continuous improvement and delivery of strong customer service.

The Director partners with all other School units, particularly faculty, marketing, academic programs, student services, and alumni relations, as well as Admissions Directors from other JHU schools with which Carey has dual academic programs.

Key responsibilities include:

    Recruit an increasingly diverse and talented student body demonstrating strong quantitative and qualitative traits. Direct quality assessment of applications for full-time MBA Represent Carey Business School to prospective students, domestic and international academic institutions, and alumni at events on- and off-campus. Recruit, hire and onboard admissions recruitment staff; Work with Executive Director of Admissions to set recruitment travel and event strategy, manage the recruitment line of the operating budget. Report to school leadership on recruitment activities and metrics.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Recruitment Management & Data-Driven Planning 40%

    Together with the Executive Director, develops and implements student recruitment and admission strategy Analyzes market research, together with the marketing department, to guide the establishment of strategic objectives and recruitment strategies based on school goals. Develops plans for local inquiry generation Formulates, disseminates, and conducts ongoing review and evaluation of admissions policies for full-time MBA. Recommend changes to maintain a competitive position in the marketplace, achieve the desired mix of new students and ensure consistent, timely and fair guidelines, policies and procedures Manages remote and on site staff located in multiple locations, including Baltimore and Washington DC.

Call Center Management (30%)

    The Director is responsible for identifying and developing culture, process and performance improvements and efficiencies for the customer and for leading/developing a team, who typically deliver customer interactions across multiple channels (including telephone, email, online, live chat, video, etc.) Creates reports in order to ensure the team is on track to meeting set goals, efficient operations, workload balance, and to identify opportunities for improvement. Audit daily activity to ensure that processes are followed efficiently within the CRM. Manage staffing and activities to ensure daily, weekly and monthly productivity goals are met.

Communication and Coordination of Activities 20%

    Manages how staff approaches conversions of inquiry to applicant and trains new staff in approach and standards. Coordinates recruitment activities with marketing department to ensure proper promotion of admissions events on- and off-campus Promotes the School and its programs through formal and informal interactions with prospective students, peer institutions, and companies. Implements and monitors ongoing coaching to ensure all Admissions representatives exhibit accurate, current, and comprehensive program and admissions knowledge Provides Executive Director with information to inform decisions regarding admission standards and eligibility. Directly or through staff, works closely with Financial Aid, Student Services, Programs and the Registrar to ensure a smooth enrollment for full-time MBA and full-time aligned dual degree candidates.

Additional Responsibilities 10%

    Regularly reviews recruitment processes and use of information technology to maintain efficient and effective processing Ensures team compliance with all School, federal, state, University and accreditation standards and requirements The Director of Recruitment manages the details of the department’s recruitment budget, under the advisement and direction of the Executive Director. May represent Carey on select internal University committees Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as needed.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. Five years related experience required. 10+ years of progressive experience in higher education admissions or in a related field desired.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • A successful record of accomplishment in graduate student recruitment.
  • Experience working in international markets.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree is strongly preferred, in Business, Higher Education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with a full time MBA population strongly preferred.
  • Experience standing up a call center strongly preferred

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to quickly learn nuances of the Carey Business School programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize and leverage data and metric driven performance processes.
  • Knowledge of program budget development and management.
  • Knowledge of customer service theory, specifically customer/constituent relationship management.
  • Exceptional project management, time management and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Results-oriented and devoted to accomplishing the admissions goals.
  • Knowledge of technology at it relates to admissions and higher education; understanding of admissions data and databases, and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated management experience with the ability to successfully build, develop, motivate, and lead a culturally diverse team.
  • Demonstrated competency in working with the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including faculty, staff, students and industry representatives.
  • Strong attention to detail, highly organized and results oriented.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of a variety of desktop software packages, including a CRM and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) for use in correspondence, analysis, information management and presentations.
  • Presents self in a professional and polished manner.
  • Strong experience in working in international settings; cross cultural competence and experience of working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to execute effectively.
  • Ability to conduct research on admissions trends.
