Position Summary:

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) provides information technology services to UW-Madison, UW System campuses, UW System Administration, and other associated agencies. DoIT employs approximately 600 people and operates with an annual budget of over $100 million dollars. The position is located within the Solutions Engineering Group (SE). SE provides application administration and systems engineering services of both on-premises and cloud-based systems for UW-Madison and UW System. SE technologists perform IT infrastructure design, implementation, administration, security, and support for a wide variety of application, cloud computing, and server platforms.

The Solutions Engineering System Engineer will act as a system administrator for both on-premises and cloud systems and services. This position will provide IT infrastructure, systems, and application support to a diverse range of campus groups in support of the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to systems administration, the SE System Engineer will perform project management on small to medium sized IT projects, and work to build, maintain, and improve SE's project workflow and relationships with its customers.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required
* Minimum two years' professional experience developing or supporting on-premises or cloud environments, applications, services, systems, or workloads. 7 years of experience required to be considered for Senior level.
* Professional experience collaborating in cross-functional teams.
* Professional experience working with customers to learn about their needs, gather requirements, recommend solutions, and oversee solution implementation.
* Commitment to customer service, including effective oral and written communication skills.
Preferred
* Experience providing technical and analytical guidance, and project management support on information technology projects.
* Experience using development languages such as Python, .NET, Ruby, Java, PowerShell, or Linux shell scripting.
* Experience with automation, configuration management, package management, or monitoring tools like Ansible, Chef, Desired State Configuration, Puppet, OpsWorks, AWS Systems Manager, Azure Configuration Manager, Helm, Packer, or Prometheus.
* Experience coordinating and delivering presentations for IT and non-IT staff.
* Experience working in information technology in a higher education environment like the University of Wisconsin System

On call work required. Occasional work outside of normal office hours required.

The candidate selected for this position will initially work remotely subject to an approved telecommuting agreement. Remote work requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on an employer provided computer. In the future, this position will likely be on-site, but future telecommuting could be discussed in accordance with policy and subject to approval. Candidate may, on occasion, be required to report to campus due to operational needs for meetings, trainings, or other activities.
