Position Summary:

A position is available in the Virology Services Unit at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC). The successful applicant for this position will work in a collaborative environment to provide technical support for virology research conducted by investigators served by the Unit. The main research area served by this position will be studying the pathogenesis of viruses of pandemic concern (e.g. HIV, influenza), as well as newly emerging viruses (including Zika virus and COVID-19), using nonhuman primate (NHP) models. The work will need to be thoroughly and effectively documented in laboratory notebooks and online databases. The Unit serves investigators based at UW-Madison, nationwide, and internationally. Duties will include coordinating shipment and receipt of samples from, and communicating experimental results to, investigators outside UW. The applicant will also be responsible for standardizing protocols, developing new ones, and effectively transferring knowledge and techniques to outside laboratories. Excellent communication skills are essential.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

BS/BA in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

At least 1 year of experience in molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, RNA and DNA purification, PCR, DNA sequencing and gel electrophoresis in a laboratory environment required. Experience working with RNA strongly preferred. Experience with quantitative PCR strongly preferred. Thorough understanding of PCR techniques strongly preferred. Experience with "next-generation" sequencing techniques and proficiency with DNA sequence analysis software desirable. Thorough understanding of current research in immunology and virology desirable.

Candidate must also be well organized, self-motivated and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The successful applicant should possess strong computer skills, as most of the data analysis and data reporting is performed electronically.

License or Certificate:

Certification for work in biosafety level 3 (BSL3); certification for work with bloodborne pathogens. Both may be acquired upon hire.
