Full time staff position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences to assist in the management of two organic geochemistry laboratories. Candidate is expected to work in person. The laboratory contains state of the art equipment for extracting and analyzing biomarkers from soil, sediment, and rock samples. Measurements in our laboratories are used to reconstruct past rainfall, temperature, biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem structure, and a variety of other facets of past environments. We seek a lab manager to assist in the day-to-day operations of our laboratory, including supervising students, troubleshooting, and maintaining instruments, and maintaining detailed records of lab data and methods.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a natural science or engineering discipline required, Master’s degree preferred

Job Specific Qualifications

• No prior experience with organic geochemical techniques is required, but a strong interest in laboratory science and comfort or desire to work with complex instruments, as well as the ability to work well with a diverse group of students, is a must.

• Candidate must also have excellent organizational skills.

• Candidate will be trained to run and troubleshoot instruments by the laboratory principal investigators on the job and will have the opportunity to co-author and lead scientific papers and projects, as well as travel to conferences to present results.

Responsibilities

• Running samples and troubleshooting gas chromatograph-isotope ratio mass spectrometer.

• Purifying samples for analysis or supervising students to purify samples.

• Ordering replacement parts or solvents and reagents, gas cylinders etc.

• Troubleshooting and working with peripheral equipment associated with IRMS (GC- FID, evaporator, extractor, etc.).
