Description/Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Development for the Foundation Department, the Senior Accountant performs advance level professional accounting activities. A Senior Accountant is responsible for examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting systems, records, and reports by applying general accepted accounting principles to modify and maintain the department’s accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements, and give fiscal advice to management. The Senior Accountant prepares detailed accounting reports, schedules, and statements including annual audit work-papers for management and external and legislative auditors. Interprets and recommends actions to be taken.

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Post financial transactions to the appropriate accounting systems.
  • Reviews, maintain and reconcile accounts, making adjustments, corrections, and journal entries as appropriate.
  • Maintains files of disbursement, and receipts.
  • Maintains paper and electronic copies of bank and investment statements and secure storage of all financial documents.
  • Works closely with the College to disburse funds from restricted accounts, including grants and scholarships.
  • Maintains permanent files for established policy and procedures.
  • Participates in the annual audit preparation including reconciliation and support schedule, prep—support for financial schedules and annual audit.
  • Provides annual reports of financial activity to scholarship donors; prepare award letters for scholarships, send notification Financial Aid Department and BCCC Finance Department.
  • Prepare annual operational budget.
  • May work with contracted accountants.
  • Maintain records of fundraising revenues and expenses and ensures fundraising budgets are submitted.
  • Compiles and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts and documenting business transactions.
  • Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and College procedures.
  • Review and investigate inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Provides monthly financial reports to grant manager.
  • Perform compliance research and monitor legislation and regulatory restrictions on College grant funding.
  • Ensure all grant related financial activities comply with current federal, state, and local regulatory and contractual mandates.
  • Monitor legislation, regulations, developments, and changes related to grants and other financial assistance; keep abreast of all compliance, reporting, accounting, and auditing changes.
  • Responds from College units, vendors, and financial institutions regarding accounts and transactions; searches accounts and transaction files for information to answer inquires.
  • Communicates with various College personnel, private and state agencies, and the college community to provide ongoing, accurate accounting information and support.
Required Education

Bachelor’s in accounting or related field.

Required Qualifications

At least 3 years in nonprofit or private accounting.
