Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Department of English in the College of Humanities and Sciences invites applicants to apply for the position of Academic Advisor. To sustain an environment of effective academic advising for undergraduate students in the College to support VCU being a leader among national research universities in providing all students with high-quality learning/living experiences focused on inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global environment. More specifically, to provide resources to maintain the student to advisor ratio in the English Department. Meeting these needs will improve student engagement through effective academic advising while supporting the identified metrics of graduation rates and retention.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•A minimum of one year of professional experience in a college or university setting.
•A minimum of three years of professional advising experience or equivalent experience in a related career field such as social work, counseling, or individualized counseling in K-12.
•Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

•Master’s degree in English, Creative Writing, or related field.
•Demonstrated experience creating, implementing, and assessing programming and/or high-impact practices in higher education.
•Demonstrated experience working with at-risk student populations.
•Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.
•Demonstrated experience in collaborative work, including service on committees related to student engagement, student success, departmental service, or academic advising.
•Completion of coursework or training related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as topics related to leadership, such as conflict resolution, coaching/mentoring, communication styles, or navigating change.

Required Licenses/ Certifications Anticipated Hiring Range $42,000 to $44,000 Application Process/Additional Information
