Full-time/Part-time Full-Time Position Type Staff Job Summary/Basic Function
The TRIO STEM Academic Specialist manages the academic support for TRIO and Bay College, which includes hiring, training, supervision, and mentoring tutors and TRIO STEM students, diagnosing and prescribing for student needs, as well as providing individualized tutoring to TRIO students. This position also provides support for grant data collection and analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
• A Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field.
• Two years of STEM work experience
• Tutoring experience
• Demonstrated ability to train and supervise tutors.
• Possess the interpersonal skills necessary for success in working with students, faculty, and administrators.
• Demonstrated knowledge of developmental math and mathematical processes and current methods of mathematics instruction pedagogy.
• The Specialist must have the ability to train and manage tutors and must possess resource skills to assist faculty in working with students with atypical learning styles.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
• Master’s degree in a STEM or STEM education related field.
• Teaching experience
• Coursework through differential equations.
• Experience in the preparation and presentation of workshops about math and science anxiety, math and science study skills, and other student success topics as needed.
• Experience administering and providing tutoring and developmental educational services.
• Experience with educational computing technology.
• Experience with barriers to postsecondary success similar to those of the program participants including students with disabilities, first generation and low income students.
Months Per Year 12 Hours Worked Per Week 40 Work Schedule Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with an hour lunch break. Supervision Exercised
Supervises tutors and study group facilitators.

Hire, train, schedule, coordinate, approve timecards and evaluate all subject tutors.

Set goals and objectives for self, tutors and TRIO students that align with Bay College’s strategic agenda and Key Performance Indicators

Create a supportive working environment that builds collegiate relationships with and support to other TRIO staff, HUB staff, faculty and peer tutors.

Individually assess the needs of each TRIO - eligible applicant for tutoring, making note of any learning challenges and develop strategies to support and help them succeed in their courses.
Job Duty
Provide (either personally or via peer tutor) individualized mathematics/sciences tutoring from basic skills through differential equations and linear algebra and help students develop critical thinking skills.

Partner with faculty to diagnose particular academic needs of students.

Regularly meet with and/or contact individual faculty members to discuss progress of TRIO tutored students and adjust tutoring plans and/or interventions as needed.
Job Duty
Serve as a resource for faculty and staff regarding mathematical/sciences and other subject content including tutoring methods and TRIO program elements.

Interact with faculty to ensure complete and consistent coverage of all topics and teaching methods used in Bay College classrooms.
Job Duty
Provide consistent training to tutors in teaching methods, learning styles and subject specific theory so they can effectively assist students of all skill levels in their courses.

Work with the Office of Accommodations to provide needed services and tools for these students to insure access to all college course materials.
Job Duty
Remain current in the field by constantly reviewing new materials and delivery methods, so students receive the most effective assistance.
Job Duty
Mentor TRIO STEM participants through First-Year Experience as assigned including academic planning and general college navigating skills.
Job Duty
Share with other TRIO staff, in mentoring and the delivery of Transition Experience activities for second, third, and fourth year students.
Job Duty
Provide normative and summative math, science and general education tutoring data analysis to Executive Director for documentation and reporting.
Job Duty
Provides support for grant data collection and analysis.
Job Duty
Work with staff to develop and propose yearly goals, strategies and tactics to enhance outcomes for TRIO program objectives through analysis of incoming students and returning student metrics.
Job Duty
Develop statistical and narrative reports regarding the success of the tutoring program. Conduct student pre- and post- semester comparative studies to determine effectiveness of tutoring services.
Job Duty
Prepare and present workshops on math anxiety, math study skills, and other topics as needed.
Job Duty
Explain and promote the TRIO program and services.
Job Duty
Attend and participate in Math and Science Division meetings.

Any other duties as assigned.
