Lecturer Assistant-Associate Teaching Professor and/or Assistant-Associate Professor of Practice in Industrial Design

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Industrial Design in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking term Lecturers, Assistant-Associate Professors of Practice, and/or Assistant-Associate Teaching Professors. These positions may be full-time or part-time (9 month) appointment starting August 2021. Course load and term of contract to be determined by departmental needs.

Design faculty members are designated educators who support the comprehensive mix of accredited and nationally ranked degree programs within the College of Design.  Our faculty help educate our students to become successful designers, planners, artists, and scholars who enhance human experience and improve the natural, social, and built environments.

We support the dissemination of design based research as it informs the quality of our everyday experiences.  Whether that is defined by ease of use, legibility, information content, aesthetics, safety, sense of place, productivity, environmental impact, effectiveness, or any number of other descriptors. Research in the College of Design reflects the diversity within the college and in the design of products, materials, building and landscape systems, and communities and regions. Faculty, students and staff work on a wide array of efforts to improve the quality of our interactions with our world through research to improve the performance of these places.

Position Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be able to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level courses in Industrial Design. Courses may include, but are not limited to, industrial design studios, design strategy, disruptive innovation, design thinking, design methods, visualization and sketching, and CAD.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, or equivalent professional degree in a related field.
  • For an Associate Professor ranking, candidates must have 6 years of teaching experience at a higher education institution with a focus on Industrial Design, or professional experience at an Industrial Design-focused company or organization. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Terminal degree in Industrial Design.
