Key Position Information:
“A successful candidate for this position must demonstrate C-Print captioning and interpreting competency in the classroom setting including editing, preparing, and providing transcripts for students. The candidate will engage with Deaf/HH students in the classroom as well as in other college environments.

The candidate selected for this position must be able to interact professionally with SPC faculty, staff, and community. The candidate must adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct as set forth by The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.”


Position Summary:
This class is the second of three levels in the Sign Language Interpretation series. Incumbents provide interpreting services or interpreting and C-print captioning services for students, faculty and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing. Responsibilities may include interpreting or C-print captioning in the classroom and other settings; providing information and resources on deaf related issues; interpreting written material; and acting as a member of the Accessibilty Resources team.


Requirements::
Education:

Associate degree required. An Interpreter Training Program (ITP) required. Bachelor's degree preferred. *

Credentials:
Sign Language Interpreter Certification, National Level; or demonstrated Sign Language Interpreting skills, plus documented C-Print Captioning training and experience (assessments from other states or agencies may be deemed equivalent).

Experience:

Five (5) years’ experience interpreting in a post-secondary setting. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience C-Print in a post-secondary setting.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Knowledge:
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and proficiency of software and hardware including but not limited to: MS Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoom, Otter, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the proper protocols in these platforms including video, audio, pinning, recording, chatting.
  • American Sign Language
  • Interpreting processes, standards, and techniques
  • Interpreters’ Code of Professional Conduct
  • Recordkeeping principles
  • Customer service principles
  • Computers and related software applications
  • C-Print Pro software and hardware (interpreters/C-print captionists)

Skills:
  • Ability to type and communicate in C-Print at a minimum of 60 wpm
  • Must demonstrate proper use of English grammar, punctuation, formatting, spelling
  • Proactive and self-disciplined re: professional development and/or accountability when working independently.
  • The ability to work as a team and proper teaming protocols when working in the classroom or virtually for both interpreting and C-Print.
  • Reviewing, compiling information, and maintaining records
  • Providing customer service
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with students, coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction

Physical:
  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

License:

Sign Language Interpreter Certification, National Level; or demonstrated Sign Language Interpreter skills, plus documented C-Print Captioning training and experience (assessments from other states or agencies may be deemed equivalent).


Responsibilities:

Day-to-day expectations include:
• Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on deafness and hard of hearing issues
• Collaborate with Accessibility Resources staff and faculty to assist deaf/hard of hearing students

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

FRE-QUENCY
1.
Provides communication links utilizing sign language interpreting, oral interpreting or C-Print captioning for deaf or hard of hearing students, faculty and staff in the classroom, during counseling, registration, tutoring, testing, advising, financial aid, extra-curricular events and activities; and in other College areas. -
Daily - 60%

2.
Reviews lesson plans, and other materials in order to facilitate accurate interpreting or C-print captioning services. -
Daily - 10%

3.
Assists Sign Language Interpreting Program by mentoring interns, advising Practicum students, and speaking in SLIP classes. -
Daily - 5%

4.
Assists Lead Interpreter in placing Interpreters/C-Print Captionists in assignments.
Daily - 10%

5.
Prepares C-print transcripts (interpreter/captionists).
Daily - 5%

6.
Collaborates with educational team and Accessibility Resources personnel. -
Daily - 5%

7.
Drives between campuses and other locations as needed.
Daily - 5%
