Job Summary

The Director of Finance for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) supports the daily financial management and related data analysis activities for the School and assists with administrative and operational tasks including facilities & building management, procurement, research administration, etc. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Administration and Finance (A&F) of SPHHS and participates in resource management and strategic planning.  The Director is responsible for the financial management of the school's $42 million budget, including the annual operating budget, fiscal policies and procedures, efficiency and effectiveness of systems, long term forecasting, and fiscal compliance and control. The position also gathers, analyzes and interprets financial data necessary for the assessment and continuous process improvement for operational areas within the School. The Director formulates school-wide procedures relating to budget, procurement, and facilities and ensures compliance with University guidelines. The Director of Finance provides advice, guidance and solutions on policies and situational problems and acts as an advisor on matters related to long-range financial planning for the School.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 5 years of experience in increasingly responsible financial positions.
  • Strong communication skills as evidenced by accurate preparation of oral and written materials including presentations, proposals, reports, memoranda and correspondence of both a technical and confidential nature.
  • Experience and competence with database systems, word-processing, spreadsheets, computer-based management tools.  Ability to direct development of technical solutions to administrative and managerial problems.  Hands-on ability to use sophisticated computer-based tools and to achieve the same for staff through training and development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fiscal management principles-budgetary/accounting procedures; personnel management; and computer spreadsheet and related software.
  • Accurate judgment of personnel capabilities and interactions, and resource issues, coupled with strong decision-making ability.
  • Excellent organizational skills to oversee numerous projects spanning many areas of expertise at the same time.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in normal and emergency situations.
  • Ability to promote a positive working environment, include collaborative, transparent, and engaging working relationships and a climate of diversity across staff, faculty and students; both in the School and across the University.
  • Commitment to staff development and engagement as well as commitment to inclusion and awareness and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, gender, and other differences.

  • Master's Degree in Management, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a university community as well as representing a department and university in internal and external communications.
