Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communication and Civic Engagement

The Department of Communication Studies at Emerson College seeks a faculty colleague with expertise in the fields of Communication Studies, Intercultural Communication and Civic Engagement. This will be a full-time appointment at the tenure-track Assistant Professor rank. The appointment begins on August 19, 2021.
Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communication and Civic Engagement
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the Communication Studies major including, but not limited to, Research Methods, Intercultural Communication, and the Fundamentals of Speech Communication course required of all Emerson students. Other courses in the Departments' Political Communication, Sports Communication, and Public Relations majors may also be available. The faculty member also will have the opportunity to develop new courses.
The position also includes opportunities to teach in the three Department of Communication Studies graduate programs: MA in Sports Communication, MA in Public Relations and the MA in Political Communication. The successful candidate should have both vision and experience in incorporating diversity and inclusion and cultural competency within the curriculum. Previous college teaching experience with diverse students or relevant professional diversity and civic engagement experience is required. We seek a candidate who could participate in all facets of the operation of the Center for Global Communication, a partnership between Emerson College and Blanquerna-Ramon Llull University School of Communication and International Relations, Barcelona. This could include, but not be limited to, helping plan and coordinate national and international academic/professional meetings and conferences, contributing to research efforts, and the development, expansion, and strengthening of networks of scholars and practitioners spanning across countries, academic disciplines, and cultures.
In addition to majors, the Department houses minors in Public Diplomacy, Nonprofit Communication, Radio, Podcasting and Streaming, Pre-Law, Public Opinion Polling, Public Relations, Esports, Leadership and Management, Political Communication and Sports Communication, and houses Emerson College's Fundamentals of Speech Communication course, required of all students at Emerson. Annually, the department participates in the international GlobCom project, a multicultural global communications competition involving 15 universities in 15 countries on five continents. The department also has immersive programs in public diplomacy, political communication, public relations and civic engagement programs in several countries, including Mexico, Canada and Australia. Finally, global opportunities exist for research and teaching in Spain, Mexico, Australia, and other locations nationally and internationally.
Emerson College's Department of Communication Studies has continuously been recognized as one of the top Communication & Media Studies programs in the United States by College Factual, a market leader in providing college rankings. The Department is the oldest communication program in the country, with roots reaching back to Emerson's founding as a school of oratory and expression in 1880.

Required Qualifications:
- Ph. D. in Communication by the position start date of August 19, 2021;
- Evidence of successful classroom teaching at the university level. In particular, candidates should demonstrate professional and/or academic experience in teaching or working with diverse populations and in multicultural settings;
- Content expertise in the areas specified above;
- A record of active, ongoing scholarly research.
