Job Description

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) at Virginia Tech welcomes applications and nominations for a Postdoctoral Associate to conduct research in the field of AI Assurance.
CCI is looking for a motivated and talented researcher with expertise in: (1) AI Assurance, (2) Data Science and Engineering, and (3) AI Algorithms and their Applications. The candidate must have previous experiences in developing, testing, and deploying AI paradigms including: machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, genetic algorithms, and swarm intelligence. Additionally, the candidate must have knowledge and interest in the explainability of AI algorithms, as well as in developing validation & verification methods that ensure the safety, security, fairness, and trustworthiness of intelligent systems.

To support the current research efforts, this position will include the development of innovative AI architectures and testbed experiments in collaboration with academic, commercial, and government researchers using the AI Testbed.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or a related field with a data science or AI background PhD awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Demonstrated Theoretical and foundational understanding of AI and learning algorithms
• Hands-on experience with statistical analysis, experimental research, including the evaluation of intelligent algorithms, and preferably the validation and verification of software systems
• A solid background in data management and AI algorithms’ inner workings
• Demonstrated ability to working effectively with on a diverse team, including researchers within Virginia Tech and other Virginia universities
• Track record in publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals/conferences
• Writing experience as first author in top tier AI and data science journals and conferences
• Good communication skills and preferably the ability to aid in supervising undergraduate and graduate students

Preferred Qualifications

• Solid background in software testing, statistics, and quality assurance principles
• Experience with applying AI algorithms for public policy (such as in economics, agriculture, smartfarming, and law)
• Big data management skills for security and safety analytics.
• Development (coding) experience in tools such as: Tensor Flow, Python, R, Spark, Keras and other AI-supporting tools.
