General summary/purpose:

The Research Technologist will be a member of the investigative team in a busy academic laboratory in the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, studying cancer immunology and developing new cancer immunotherapies to benefit patients. The applicant will process human blood/tissue specimens, perform flow cytometry, be responsible for independently conducting experiments under the supervision of senior staff, and contribute to general maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

    Follows established lab procedures and protocols precisely to perform experiments. Uses sterile techniques as required. Processes, stores and logs human clinical trial bio-specimens (blood and other specimens) with meticulous care and accuracy. Performs flow cytometry, including staining, data acquisition and analysis with FlowJo or similar software. Assists with molecular biology assays. Assists with research projects, published journal database searches, and troubleshooting. Maintains sophisticated lab equipment. Operates lab computers for data entry and analysis. Maintains accurate, clear and detailed data records in hard copy and electronically. Must be able to communicate well and work with teams. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.

Preferred qualifications:

    At least one year of post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent undergraduate research project not related to normal course requirements. Experience and/or knowledge of in vitro cell culture, flow cytometry, and/or molecular biology techniques a plus. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software required.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Knowledge of Windows computers and Microsoft Office applications.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
