Position Overview:

Provide guidance and counseling to students in matters related to academic goals, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, and course scheduling. Complete degree checks for individual students and student groups as needed. Assist with student orientation, whether freshman or transfer students. Develops and/or completes college/school documents such as classroom assignments, plans of study, curriculum guides, graduation forms, and study abroad documentation. Serve as a resource for the university’s student database including coordinating input, generating reports, training users, and recommending updates. Verify/report student and course information which may include (but not limited to) class rolls, grades, academic certification of athletes/veterans, statistical analyses, and/or forced drops. Evaluate and/or update student records in order to post grades, do graduation checks, monitor student progress, and advise students on an appropriate course of study. May assist with recruitment of prospective students. Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems. Possesses solid working knowledge of subject matter. Typically exempt and does not supervise other staff (may supervise students). Typically reports to a department head or manager.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Acts as a resource person for transformational learning opportunities helping students find appropriate co-curricular activities which will provide opportunities for leadership, undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity, civic engagement, service learning, global and cultural competencies, and health and wellness.

Acts as a liaison between the College of Business departments and Business students, attending department meetings and consulting with department chairpersons as needed.

Acts as a liaison between the College of Business and other offices on campus such as the Volunteer & Service Learning Center, the Centre for Global Competency, and Career Development Center to foster communication about transformational learning opportunities and about student utilization of success-oriented services.

Counsels students regarding academic endeavors.

Works with the College of Business Curriculum Committee to give advice on new course proposals, program changes, and new program proposals.

Provides feedback to College of Business departments regarding student trends in enrollment and major selection.

Assists in the development and implementation of student success programs and materials.

Makes recommendations related to policy changes to the College of Business and Enrollment Services.

Completes degree checks for individual students and student groups as needed.

Articulates course work as needed.

May provide guidance and direction to clerical staff and part-time advisors as required.

Oversees a particular area of expertise in student retention.

Participates in training and evaluative sessions and recommends academic advising and retention methods to improve advisement activities.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field. Understanding of the University policies and procedures as they relate to academic advising. Ability to maintain databases. 3+ years of academic advising experience.

Qualifications Preferred:

Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related fields. Prior academic advising/counseling experience. Proficiency in basic mathematics. Familiarity with admission and enrollment process at the University of Central Oklahoma or in an institution of higher education setting and its undergraduate degree programs. Willingness to work within the academic framework of the University and to serve on faculty and student committees.

Responsibilities/ Skills / Competencies:

Knowledgeable in the higher education attainment process, particularly the requirements and general value of education. Demonstration of a professional attitude and creative counseling techniques. Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with department chairpersons and/or deans regarding degree program requirements. Keen attention to detail. Ability to work well under pressure.
