The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, or the Department of Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering (CISE). Candidates are sought whose research focuses on fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and who are interested in collaborative research with the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity (FICS) Research, housed within the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. FICS Research is the nation’s premier multidisciplinary research institute focused on the advancement of cybersecurity with major partnerships and collaborations among industry, academe, and government. FICS Research covers all aspects of cybersecurity and assurance including hardware, network, mobile, big data, Internet of Things, applied crypto, social sciences, law, and more. The institute’s direct support of industry and government partners also enhances the educational experience and outcome for a diverse set of top-quality graduate and undergraduate students. Engineers and scientists interested in emerging FHE cryptographic applications and implementation will find a wealth of opportunities for supportive and multi-disciplinary collaboration in this position.

The University of Florida is the flagship campus of the State of Florida university system and is ranked as the #6 best public US university according to US News and World Report. UF recently announced a $70 million artificial intelligence partnership with NVIDIA to create an AI-centric data center that houses the world's fastest AI supercomputer in higher education. Of particular relevance to this new faculty position, the HWCOE is in the process of creating the programmatic backbone to UF’s efforts to change the future of education and workforce development through university-wide AI training and experiential learning efforts.

The Department of ECE in the HWCOE is a vibrant, multidisciplinary highly collaborative environment, consistently ranked among the top departments for both graduate and undergraduate programs. It offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs with an enrollment of about 1200 full-time undergraduate students and 600 graduate students of which about 200 are PhD students. Currently, the ECE Department has 57 tenured/tenure-track faculty which include 17 IEEE fellows, 17 NSF CAREER Award winners, and 7 PECASE winners. The Department’s external research expenditures are at record high, $21M last year using the ASEE definition. The ECE graduate program ranks #17 among public ECE departments (#27 overall) according to U.S. News and World Report. The department leads several university-wide multidisciplinary institutes related to AI and Signal/Image/Video processing including the NSF Center for Big Learning, the Nelms Institute for the Connected World, and the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity (FICS) Research.

The Department of CISE in the HWCOE is a vibrant, multidisciplinary highly collaborative environment, consistently ranked among the top departments for both graduate and undergraduate programs; the computer engineering graduate program was recently ranked #12 among public US universities. It offers BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, with an enrollment of 2,440 undergraduate students and 668 graduate students of which 148 are PhD students. The CISE department currently has 55 faculty. Collectively, the list of achievements and awards received by the faculty include one Fulbright Scholar; 19 NSF CAREER Award winners; eight IEEE Fellows; three ACM Fellows; three AAAS Fellows; one IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Education Award; one IEEE Computer Society W. Wallace-McDowell Award; and one ACM Karl Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. The Department's external research expenditures were over $8.8 million last year, an increase of over 60% over the past five years.

Dr. Walden “Wally” Rhines, former CEO of Mentor Graphics, a leading semiconductor EDA company, and son of the founding chair of the UF Department of Materials Science & Engineering Dr. Frederick N. Rhines, has endowed the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering with this professorship in FHE, a form of data analysis that allows artificial intelligence or machine learning programs to perform computations on encrypted data without having to decrypt the data first. FHE, considered the only unbreakable cybersecurity protection, plays a critical role in shaping the success of any organization where secure data storage, processing and transmission are of prime importance. This gift for the FHE professorship will continue to further UF’s progress as a globally recognized leader in the field of cybersecurity research and in the application of artificial intelligence.

The successful candidate is expected to have a doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering, computer science and engineering, or a related field at the time of hiring. In addition, the candidate should have a record of successful proposal writing, mentoring, and classroom teaching of undergraduate and graduate students.

The anticipated start for the position is Fall 2021 with some flexibility for a later start based on individual needs.
