Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 600 full-time, part-time, and student employees. The College of Engineering invites candidates to apply for the position of Communications Specialist.

This position directly supports the Engineering Career Services Department by providing and executing strategic marketing and communication for all internal and external audiences, including students, employers, faculty and staff, and parents. This position is responsible for:
- Developing, maintaining, and executing a strategic Master Communications Plan for the department
- Managing and executing the department’s strategic integrated marketing and communications campaigns, working with Engineering Marketing and Communications on projects, as necessary
- Effectively and accurately communicating service offerings to students, alumni, and existing and potential corporate partners
- Managing all communication efforts including all email, digital, and print marketing materials including targeted event promotion and communication to internal and external audiences
- Collaborating effectively and working well independently and in a team environment
- Supervising student worker and work study students
- Utilizing Microsoft Office products and Adobe Design Suite to develop marketing materials, newsletters, reports, and other documents
- Managing the messaging for the departments website, working with the College’s Webmaster to ensure all information is accurate

Minimum Hiring Standards

- Strong marketing and communication experience including some experience with strategic communication planning
-Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Design Suite
- Experience with marketing programs through social media
-Strong organizational skills with effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including strong writing, editing and proofreading skills

-Strong customer service orientation, with commitment to quality
-Responsible, mature, self-starter with the ability to handle sensitive/confidential matters are essential qualities

Preferred Hiring Standards

- Previous experience in similar positions within a University setting is preferred.
- Some college, or equivalent combination of college and/or related experience, is preferred
- Understanding of best practices and demonstrated experience marketing to college students and business and business communications
