Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is the advancement of science through research and the training of graduate and professional students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and education essential to the graduate program and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Department provides graduate and professional students with courses and research experiences that prepare them for their careers. Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Pharmacology & Toxicology invites candidates to apply for this non-tenure eligible Assistant Professor position to conduct and coordinate all research activities within the research group led by Dr. Paul Whiteaker. This role will be responsible for the design and implementation of experiments involving specialized research procedures, to ensure the continuation of research support awarded to Dr. Whiteaker. The incumbent will also be expected to conceptualize new projects, generate preliminary work, and apply for independent external funding or serve as co-investigator for additional projects funded within the Whiteaker lab.

Position Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position will be in the area of research. The faculty member will assist the PI and collaborators with implementation of critical tasks, including experimental design, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation related to the aims of currently funded or future projects. Moreover, the faculty member will play a significant role in conceptualizing new projects, generating preliminary work, and applying for appropriate external funding. The incumbent is expected to direct research studies to analyze data and serve as a principal investigator in the preparation and submission of manuscripts and grant proposals as well as actively engage in service that supports the department, SOM, and VCU, and to participate in service to the profession.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in neuroscience or similar field, with emphasis in neuropharmacology or neurophysiology

• At least five years of relevant postdoctoral training

• Documented scientific portfolio of at least 10 scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals

• Evidence of the ability to think creatively and to design fundable research projects

• Established expertise in single-cell and single-channel electrophysiology techniques

• Experience working on ion-channel biology with an emphasis on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors

• Competence in cell culture techniques

• Familiarity with the use of transgenic rodent models

• Ability to work independently, as well as an ability to collaborate and communicate with a team of investigators on complex projects

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Current or prior independent funding and mentoring experience are highly preferred
