The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, which is home to the fully online Master of Science in Addiction Studies Program, is recruiting a graduate-level instructor for a 4-credit course within the Addiction Studies Program entitled “Public Health Issues and Approaches to Addiction” ( IPAS 602 C95) for the Fall 2021 term. Course dates vary slightly from the standard VCU semester structure (August 16, 2021-December 10, 2021). Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
Position duties include:
• Meet all designated course instruction guidelines
• Prepare and disseminate online lecture material
• Moderate online discussions
• Facilitate 1 or 2 synchronous discussions using Zoom
• Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner based on instructions/rubrics where provided
• Provide feedback to Program Director on student participation and progress
• Provide samples of student work for external evaluator review at partner university
• Provide an end of semester course overview for international partner ( KCL and UA) review
• Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours
• Submit final grades according to School policy
Candidate will be responsible for teaching one section of IPAS 602 C95 Public Health Issues and Approaches to Addiction (4 credits), which is a course in the fully online MS in Addiction Studies program (also known as the International Programme in Addiction Studies ( IPAS )), which is jointly offered by VCU, King’s College London and the University of Adelaide (Australia). Students in the program are often from a number of different countries and cultures, and have varied occupational interests/backgrounds (e.g., medicine, nursing, addiction counseling, policy, advocacy, research, health care management, etc.). As such, they are not assumed to have a prior background in epidemiology or public health. Given that this is one of the first courses in a fully online program, it is essential that the instructor be committed to engaging students and providing support while offering a challenging academic experience.
Course Content Description:
This course provides an introduction to basic concepts and research methods in Public Health and Epidemiology as they relate to the study of addictions, as well as an in-depth consideration of the personal, social, economic, and cultural burdens/costs associated with drug and alcohol abuse and dependence. Individual and community-based risk and protective factors related to addictions and primary and secondary prevention efforts aimed at reducing the addictions-related public health burden are also a focus. An online lecture format featuring presentations by leading researchers and policymakers in the field of addictions will be used, along with readings, online discussions, and writing assignments, to (1) gain a greater understanding of the enormous costs of addictions at every level of society, and (2) introduce students to some of the current thinking and programs related to the primary and secondary prevention of addictions.
Current learning objective include the following:
a. Understand basic concepts of public health and epidemiology
b. Explain how to identify risk and protective factors related to addiction
c. Describe the personal, social, economic and cultural burdens associated with addiction
d. Evaluate different prevention efforts toward addiction
e. Critique research literature
– Master’s degree in epidemiology or public health
– Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
– Doctoral level study or Ph.D in a related discipline strongly preferred
– Additional discipline-specific training or expertise in the epidemiology of substance use and/or addiction
– Previous experience teaching or assisting in teaching online or hybrid courses
– Previous experience working or conducting research in the field of substance use / addiction
– Demonstrated ability to work with students/individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences
