The Industrial Design program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, University of Houston seeks a Visiting Professor in Industrial Design with educational and practical experience in the discipline of industrial design beginning August, 2021. This visiting professorship is for a one-year appointment to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the industrial design program and to participate in discussions of future strategies for the program.

The Industrial Design program has been acknowledged as the sixth-ranking program in the United States and the 14th-ranking program internationally. It has won numerous awards in the International Housewares Competition, the Bienenstock Furniture Competition, and the Red Dot Awards, and in 2019 its students received the IDSA Student Merit Award at the graduate and undergraduate level. The program, established in 2003, supports a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design and a Master of Science in Industrial Design.

Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city, is the world capital of the energy, medical, and aerospace industries where new start-up companies and entrepreneurships flourish with creative talents. The University of Houston is a leading public university recognized as one of eight tier-one research public universities in Texas by Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The College invites innovative designers/scholars to help strategize on the growth of the BS ID and MS ID programs, and their relationships with other disciplines within the College, the University, the community, and corporations.

The ideal candidate for this position would have a proven ability and interest in seeking out and working with diverse constituencies in order to build innovative and distinctive industrial design academic and research initiatives. Qualified candidates should be experienced design educators and should distinguish themselves as design professionals. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
