Research Associate - 3D Genomics

Summary

The Research Associate will conduct complex research related to genetics, genomics and molecular biology under guidance of Dr. Aiden and other senior lab members, requiring proficient knowledge of such disciplines. The Aiden lab's work is cutting edge and lies on the intersection of biology, computer science, physics and mathematics and its primary focus is exploring the three-dimensional structure of the human genome. The lab's work has been featured on the cover of Nature, Science and Cell. Dr. Aiden and his team have been responsible for seminal advances in a diverse array of fields spanning molecular biology, polymer physics, mathematics, and others. These include the invention of three dimensional genome sequencing, and consequent discoveries of the mechanisms of genome compartmentalization (Lieberman-Aiden et al., Science, 2009; Lieberman Aiden, Science, 2011) and loop extrusion (Sanborn & Rao et al., PNAS, 2015); the first reliable, genome-wide maps of chromatin looping (Rao & Huntley et al., Cell, 2014, Rao et al., Cell, 2017); and the development of 3D genome surgery to modify genome folding using targeted mutations (Sanborn & Rao et al., PNAS, 2015).

Job Duties
  • Plan, direct, and conduct functional genomics experiments such as bulk and single cell Hi-C, RNA-Seq, ChIP- Seq, ATAC-Seq.
  • Adapt functional genomics protocols for use with high throughput robotic workflows.
  • Design and develop new technologies for functional genomics using long-read sequencing technologies.
  • Evaluate and analyze data and document and report results of experiments to principal investigators.
  • Construct and maintain new and existing mammalian cell lines (experience in mammalian cell culture is essential, experience with CRISPR and/or transposon-mediated integration, and fluorescence activated cell sorting [FACS] is useful).
  • May supervise and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff and occasionally assist with grant writing.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field. Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in basic fundamental molecular biology techniques (such as gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, PCR, qPCR, molecular cloning) is essential.
  • Experience in multiple of the following is essential: next generation sequencing library preparation; nanopore sequencing; single cell assays; functional genomics (RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq); high-throughput robotic workflows, microscopy (especially fluorescence in situ hybridization [FISH]); lentivirus production; biochemistry (protein purification from E. coli, baculovirus infected insect cells).
