University Housing units include Business services, Dining Services, Facilities Services, Promotions & Student Recruitment, and Residence Life. University Housing is an educational and business department that is a self-sustaining, self-liquidating agency of the university (receives no tuition or tax support for its operating budget).
This position reports directly to the Associate Director for Human Resources, and is responsible for a wide variety of Human Resource functions that support the department. They provide front-line support and expertise to the department, with duties that include (but are not limited to) recruiting, onboarding, retention, and supervision of payroll staff and functions for the department.
The Sr. HR Generalist oversees all aspects of recruitment and search processes for Housing positions and promotes best practices in interactions that reflect the values of University Housing and are aligned with the institutional commitment to maintaining an environment of inclusive excellence for all members of our community.
This position supports these efforts by providing comprehensive tools and resources as well as consultation, guidance, and support to hiring managers, search chairs and committees during the recruitment, selection, and hiring process.
In addition, they assist in the handling of employee relations issues, including assisting in investigations and researching and compiling payroll and other information. These duties are carried out in a confidential capacity with the ability to handle confidential material appropriately while maintaining an institutional perspective.
The Sr. HR Generalist supervises 2 classified staff and oversees the day to day payroll functions for the department. They assume full management responsibility for the unit in the absence of Housing's Associate Director for Human Resources.
- Three years of experience in Human Resources
- Two years of experience leading or supervising the work of
- Ability to function cooperatively and productively as a member
of a team
- Provide excellent customer service by building and maintaining
effective rapport with colleagues
- Prioritize work, meet deadlines, and exhibit flexibility and
adaptability to changing priorities
- Effectiveness in project management, including presentation and
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to address
various audiences utilizing various platforms
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and
- Excellent critical thinking, consultative and problem-solving
- Excellent human relations and facilitation skills in order to
effectively handle matters that require tact, discretion,
influence, and diplomacy
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Demonstrated ability to create, learn and follow processes,
demonstrated good judgement on when and how to deviate from
processes and/or identify and escalate issues.
- Bachelor's degree
- Current HR Certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or
- Experience in higher education
- Experience using HRIS or or recruitment management
- Experience with recruitment functions, such as recruitment
outreach, position description/vacancy announcement development,
candidate evaluation/selection, and hiring/onboarding
- Experience using productivity software such as Microsoft
- Experience working with a unionized work force and applying
collective bargaining agreement language to personnel
- Understanding of employment law related to equal opportunity,
discrimination, personnel actions
- Experience overseeing payroll operation in a large, complex
