General Summary/Purpose:

This position prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists. May assist in research studies and billing.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This position must maintain site logs of all specimens, including use of a specialized electronic system. Specimens must be accessioned, sectioned and immunohistochemically labeled. Position helps mount slides, stain and observe under microscope in order to assist with quality control. Provides quality assurance checks on laboratory reports and communicates with outside testing labs to resolve discrepancies. Maintains aseptic technique. Individual should demonstrate organization, problem solving, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Under supervision, this person reviews clinical reports and determines the distribution of CPT codes based on the tests performed. Regular and timely attention to this process and good documentation technique is required.
  • This person works on development of new clinical technical protocols to be used by our lab. Databases need to be maintained in both hard copy and computer formats. Various regulatory guidelines (CAP, CLIA, FDA, JCAHO, OSEH etc.) must also be followed. This includes various daily record updates, including items like performance improvements, quality assurance and quality control measures. This position may process and ship blood-related specimens to outside central labs. Some of these samples will be express shipped out to other labs and others will be placed into an organized repository at this location. This individual will also assist with a variety of study related tasks.
  • Manage biohazard waste per JHMI policies. Attend training sessions for IRB updates, Human Subjects Protection, HIPAA, DOT/IATA, Blood borne pathogens, Fire Safety, Laboratory Safety, and other potential renewals as required by Sponsors/University. Contribute to QA/QC process.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with histology.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
