Purpose:

Work in the Janak lab focuses on the brain systems that regulate substance use and addiction and reward learning, using rodent models. The Research Technologist we seek is responsible for providing critical technical support for the research team and ensuring the lab runs smoothly. The Research Technologist will be trained to assist multiple scientists in animal behavioral studies of learning and addiction, animal surgery, tissue histology, and breeding of animal colonies. The Research Technologist plays a major role in the day-to-day functioning of the research lab by fulfilling these and additional responsibilities including record-keeping, analyzing data, ordering supplies, and keeping organized records on equipment service, and assisting with regulatory requirements. This is a full-time position subject to the availability of funds.

Key Skills and abilities

  • Some prior knowledge of research and the capability of learning additional aspects of animal research and and animal care protocols.
  • Knowledge and capability of learning and using laboratory techniques such as stereotaxic surgery, brain sectioning, drug self-administration and optogenetics.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a research team.
  • Interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills to interact with members of the department and lab. Knowledge of MS Office suite (Word and Excel), email software (MS Exchange or similar), Adobe, internet browser, and statistical and data anlaysis software packages such as Prism, SPSS, and Matlab (preferred).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, behavioral sciences or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some relatedundergraduateor post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in an animal research lab preferred, particularly with rodent handling, training, and/or stereotaxic surgery.
  • Experience in tissue handling and histology and in optogenetic techniques preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
