The Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases seeks a Physician Assistant to serve as a full-time clinical provider for the Johns Hopkins Viral Hepatitis Program consisting of 8 half-day clinic sessions per week. Medical care will include obtaining a medical history, performing appropriate physical examinations, assessing patient problems, and resolution of identified problems by appropriate medical management. The scope of service includes outpatient management of patients with acute and chronic viral hepatitis infections, HIV, Substance Use Disorders, and general medical conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examines and evaluates new and return patients and documents findings in electronic medical record. This is to include, as needed: medical history, physical examination, orders for medications, diagnostic tests, vaccines, consults and review/communication of results with implementation of intervention.
  • Implements protocols for HBV and HCV evaluation, treatment, monitoring; to include monitoring adverse effects, adherence, diagnostic tests and treatment outcomes.
  • Completes all forms requiring the attention of a clinician, i.e., insurance prior authorizations and appeals, vocational rehabilitation, social services, automated information management input documents and abstracts patient records as required.
  • Provides consultations, makes patient referrals and arranges transition to inpatient hospitalization with appropriate medical providers.
  • Participates in training and education of other medical/nursing providers and students.
  • Participates in patient research activities including IRB approved investigator initiated protocols and pharmaceutical sponsored clinical trials.
  • Supports the transition of patients from clinical care to and from research participation in conjunction with our research teams including the Viral Hepatitis Center research group, ACTG, investigator initiated study teams, other JH institutional research programs and outside research programs.
  • Counsels patients and families regarding disease information, prevention, treatment, follow-up care.
  • Collaborates with all members of viral hepatitis patient care team including other medical providers, nurses, case managers, pharmacy team, peer navigators, fibroscan technician, and medical office coordinator and on site clinic staff to ensure continuity of viral hepatitis patient care.
  • Covers all aspects of patient management for other viral hepatitis medical team members as needed.
  • Conducts educational sessions for patients, families, and other medical professionals.
  • Communicates with providers at outside institutions, referring providers, and other health care teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Utilizes electronic patient record to communicate and document patient care interactions and interventions.
  • Seeks consultation with supervising medical provider when appropriate.
  • Completes fibroscan technician training and performs fibroscans as needed.
  • Attends monthly clinical team meetings, required divisional meetings, conferences and continuing education programs.
  • Provides emergency services to the Department of Medicine as needed.
  • Maintains a current and valid license in accordance with the respective governing board.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body (or certification-eligible for new graduates). Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Related experience in the provision of direct patient care working with adults. Knowledge of the clinical manifestations and management of viral hepatitis infection, HIV infection, acute and chronic liver disease, substance use disorder preferred. Community based/public health clinical experience encouraged.

  • Knowledge of viral hepatitis, liver disease, HIV, substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders and general chronic medical conditions.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse patient, staff and community populations.
  • Ability to function both autonomously and in collaboration in multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, local and institutional guidelines regarding conduct of research studies.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
