Data Scientist

Position Summary:

  • The Johns Hopkins Precision Medicine initiative is building an environment to help researchers discover and implement new healthcare interventions. We are doing this at scale and across a broad range of disciplines.
  • The Data Scientist will be primarily responsible for taking algorithms developed as part of research and modifying them for production use in clinical settings inside and outside of Johns Hopkins without sacrificing their scientific validity. In the course of that work, this role may work with medical research groups on original research, advising on study designs, performing analyses, creating intervention algorithms, and preparing findings for publication.

Job Scope/Complexity:

  • The Data Scientist will be part of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center and will work full-time with the Precision Medicine team (as well as clients, data stewards, project/program managers, and other IT teams). This position will be a critical member of the Precision Medicine initiative’s data science team, which is at the vanguard helping to translate new science into clinical practice across a range of health conditions.
  • In support of this project, the Data Scientist will be working with the Precision Medicine Analytics Platform team to help define and build the analytical tools, environments and infrastructure for operational and medical research and analysis.
  • The position will turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound decisions. Other responsibilities will include working across PMAP user groups to provide data that is clean, congruent and reliable; proposing innovative ways to look at problems by mining available data; and mentoring analytics staff on tools and frameworks.
  • Required Education:
    Master’s Degree in mathematics, statistics or computer science or related field
  • PHD degree preferred.

Required Experience:

  • Requires 5 or more years of relevant quantitative research and analytics experience.
  • Requires 2 years of complex programming experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Advanced knowledge of statistical techniques.
  • The ability to come up with solutions to loosely defined business problems by leveraging pattern detection over potentially large datasets.
  • Experience with programming skills (experience with SQL; experience with tools such as Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Jupyter, MapReduce, or similar; extensive experience with languages such as Python, R, Scala,Java, or similar); some experience with statistical modeling (SAS, R, or similar).
  • Experience participating in data science projects that demonstrate business or research value.
  • Experience with automated analyses and reproducible analytic products.
  • Experience using machine learning algorithms.
  • Proficiency in the use of statistical packages.
  • Experience in informal mentoring of analytics staff.
  • Experience presenting complex analyses to leadership at previous organizations.
  • Must demonstrate strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting demands.

Job Responsibilities:

BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS

  • Leads discovery processes with stakeholders to identify business requirements and expected outcomes.
  • Works with and alongside business analysts by suggesting other products of interest to the client.
  • Models and frames business scenarios that are meaningful and which impact on critical business processes and/or decisions.
  • Works with a community of engaged stakeholders, who generate questions and hypotheses to make decisions about the direction of research.
  • Works closely with the Precision Medicine Analytics Platform team to define and build the analytical tools, environments and infrastructure for operational research and analysis.

ANALYSIS

  • Develops innovative and effective approaches to solve client's analytics problems and communicates results and methodologies.
  • Works in iterative processes with the client and validates findings.
  • Develops experimental design approaches to validate finding or test hypotheses.
  • Validates analysis using scenario modeling.
  • Identifies/creates the appropriate algorithm to discover patterns.

POLICIES, STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES

  • Develops usage and access control policies and systems in collaboration with the data steward.
  • Partners with the data stewards in continuous improvement processes impacting data quality in the context of the specific use case.
  • Recommends ongoing improvements to methods and algorithms that lead to findings, including new information.

METRICS

  • Provides business metrics for the overall project to show improvements (contribution to the improvement should be monitored initially and over multiple iterations).
  • Demonstrates the following scientist qualities: clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, significance, and fairness.

LEADERSHIP

  • Participate in interviewing, as well as contributing to performance evaluations of other Data Scientists in the Precision Medicine program.
Systems and Applications

  • The Data Scientist will work with the following systems and applications:
  • Precision Medicine Analytics Platform – guiding requirements development of hospital administration and operations segment of the Platform, including regulatory and hospital finance
  • Precision Medicine Delivery Platform – contributing to clinical decision support applications intended to bring cutting edge science into clinical care.

Starting Salary Range: $109,854 - $151,082; commensurate with experience.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
