General Summary/Purpose:

Under general supervision, performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Follows established procedures and protocols utilizing appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments. Exchange routine information in an appropriate manner. Has regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows. The research technologist will assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, clinical sample and data collection, IRB and animal protocol revision/renew/ or new applications. The position will also be involved in manuscript and grant writing and preparation.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows established protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory experiments. The research technologist will assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, clinical sample and data collection, IRB and animal protocol revision/renew/ or new applications. The position will also be involved in manuscript and grant writing and preparation.
  • Documents and reports test results. Completes required logs and supporting documents.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication. Regular interaction with trainees, research staff, vendors, and faculty members. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects.
  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as microscopes.
  • General laboratory upkeep for cleanliness and safety.
  • Responsible for routine operational activities such as ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc., and preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years related research laboratory experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of good lab practices.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
