VOCATIONAL LECTURER – FIRE SCIENCE

MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Located near the Illinois Medical District, on the near west side of Chicago, Malcolm X College’s College to Careers programs offers accessible and affordable opportunities for academic advancement, career development, and personal enrichment.

The Fire Science program has been developed in collaboration with the Chicago Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office. Courses are largely taught by faculty instructors that are experienced fire fighters from the Chicago Fire Department and surrounding areas. Those that join this program are current working professionals within the fire service and are seeking career advancement or are students who are interested in pursuing a future career in the fire service or related emergency service fields.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, commitment to integrating new technologies in the learning process and the ability to inspire, motivate and empower students to succeed.
  • Development and revision of courses and instructional materials as necessary.
  • Maintain office hours for mentoring students.
  • Participate in assessment of students’ readiness to participate in clinical education.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Instructors for Fire Science courses must hold a minimum of an Associate’s degree or higher
  • Must have experience as a Fire Officer with a department of specific expertise in fire science management
  • Fire Instructor certificate from the Office of the State Fire Marshal is strongly encouraged
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college
  • Excellent computer and technology skills
