The Division of Urologic Oncology within the Brady Urological Institute is seeking a Research Specialist to assist primarily with our translational and clinical research efforts in kidney cancers, urothelial cancers, and testicular cancers. The ideal candidate should be organized, efficient, willing to learn, work well on a team, and proficient in both laboratory techniques and database management/inventorying.
Under minimal supervision, the Research Specialist will be expected to perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols.
The Research Specialist will participate in the design of experiments and analysis of data; work independently and manage research tasks; assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, data collection/maintenance, and organization of the laboratory; curate and prepare samples for nucleic acid extraction and sequencing (including coring/macrodissection and DNA/RNA isolation); develop assays, prepare immunohistochemical stains, review protocols and complete measurements as assigned; collect patient tissue specimens and store them within our biorepository; assist with updating our cancer databases with clinical and pathological data prospectively; assist with regulatory requirements including IRB submissions and DTA/MTA agreements; and use analytical and decision-making skills to implement assigned projects and troubleshoot problems.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform clinical and/or research laboratory tests and experiments:

Develop assays and run assigned tasks/experiments
after discussion with investigator.
Follow established procedures and protocols, and
utilize appropriate techniques to develop, perform and analyze
laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include making
protocol modification within the parameters set by
investigator.
Perform a variety of technical procedures on research
specimens to include human/animal fresh tissue, frozen sections,
cell suspensions, paraffin, and plastic embedded
tissues.
Perform experimental procedures for evaluation by
Principle Investigator and contribute in the evaluation,
troubleshooting and development of procedures for new
assays
Perform a variety of biotechnological laboratory
techniques and tests including, but not limited to, curating and
preparing samples for nucleic acid extraction and sequencing
(including coring/macrodissection, DNA/RNA isolation, library
preparation), PCR, Western blotting, ELISA assays, preparing
immunohistochemical stains, assisting with organoid model
development, and being comfortable working with cell lines and
animal models.
Work independently to evaluate whether component
parts of experiments are working as they
should.
Support research with Primary Investigators and Partners:

Assist clinical and research staff with patient data
collection, including but not limited to, reviewing medical
records, lab results, diagnostic results, visit notes, data entry,
and data clarification.
Assist with requisition, inventorying, and curation
of patient samples in our biorepository by interacting closely with
our Pathology core.
Assist with collection, entering of data into
databases, and compiling of data for reports and
presentations.
Participate in routine group meetings and/or
study-specific teleconferences.
Assist with data for research and
manuscripts.
Assist with regulatory requirements including IRB
submissions and DTA/MTA agreements.
Effectively communicate and interact with residents,
fellows, and clinicians.
Perform literature searches and use critical thinking
to design experiments, interpret and evaluate results, analyze and
translate data for scientific journal
publications.
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
1 year laboratory experience performing related techniques.
Master’s degree with related graduate research, may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
