The Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease is seeking aNurse Practitionerto provide specialized clinical care and harm reduction services to patients served at Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) Sexual Health Clinics. The provider’s scope of service will include managing patients with sexually transmitted infections, HIV, HCV, providing PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV), wound care, and substance abuse disorder. The provider will work in multiple clinical setting settings in order provide unique entrance points where patients can access healthcare. This will include working at the BCHD STD clinics, at the SPARC Center (a women’s drop in center in Southwest Baltimore) and the BCHD mobile clinic (The Spot), which provides clinical services to people in communities around Baltimore City. Medical care will include obtaining a medical history, performing appropriate physical examinations, assessing patients’ problems, and resolution of identified problems by appropriate medical management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Provider examines and evaluates all new and return patients and documents findings. This is to include, as needed: medical history, physical examination, written orders for chemotherapy, diagnostic tests, and review of results of bacteriologic and laboratory examinations. Implements protocols for treatment, monitoring adverse effects, and emergency procedures, recognizing that the condition of individual patients may occasionally require a medical decision to alter certain aspects of these protocols. Completes all forms requiring the attention of a clinician, i.e., insurance, vocational rehabilitation, social services, automated information management input documents and abstracts patient records as required. Provides consultations, makes patient referrals and arranges general hospitalization with appropriate medical care providers. Participates in in-service training and supervises clinical training of approved students and physicians-in-training. Participates in research activities authorized by JHU and BCHD. Counsels patients, providing disease information about treatment, prevention follow-up care, sex partner referral and contraception as appropriate. Performs related tasks as assigned. Provides Emergency Services to the Department as needed. Works with BCHD outreach and Disease Intervention Specialists to identify, locate and attempt to re-engage people who have been out of healthcare for HIV/HCV/STDs. Maintain a current and valid license in accordance with the respective governing board.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of STD/HIV/HCV disease, treatments, and resources
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse patient, staff and community populations
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team setting
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through
  • Knowledge of spoken Spanish is preferred (but not required)
Education:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Active Maryland CDS and DEA X waiver to prescribe buprenirphine. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
