Assistant Director of Admissions



Job Description:

As a member of the undergraduate admissions staff, the Assistant Director will work closely with the Admissions and Financial Aid team to implement recruitment and assessment activities in support of the University’s annual enrollment goals. Responsibilities include managing a recruitment territory and travel schedule, conducting group information sessions and interviews- virtual and in person, and evaluating admission and scholarship applications. Assistant Director will have primary responsibility for managing the on-campus annual and biannual events, namely the office’s Diversity and Inclusion Visit Experiences (DIVE), Admitted Student Days, counselor fly- ins and MAZE alumni admission program; and for creatively considering new program ideas.

Other duties will be assigned based on the selected candidate’s background skills, and professional experience. Preference will be afforded to candidates with selective admissions experience and writing/editorial experience. The Admissions and Financial Aid division is characterized by a high degree of teamwork and camaraderie, a high level of energy and commitment, exceptional communication skills and creative problem-solving abilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Brings strategic and technical eye to on-campus event planning; and lead the various team members to execute each event.

  • Frequently corresponds with prospective students, their parents, secondary schools personnel, alumni, and others, answering their questions and providing counsel about the admission process and W&L programs and opportunities.

  • Interviews prospective students and conducts group information sessions, both in-person and virtually.

  • Responsible for seasonal recruitment travel for assigned geographic territory, consisting of a combination of high school visits, college fairs, receptions, and information sessions,

  • Evaluates, documents and assess applications for first- year and transfer admission and scholarship opportunities.

  • Primary Liaison with the Office of Inclusion and Engagement.

  • Serve as one of four athletic liaisons in Office of Admission.

  • Additional duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree is required. Preferred candidates will have one to three years of experience in selective admissions. A demonstrated dedication to a residential liberal arts education, appreciation for diversity, the ability to work well collaboratively as well as independently, editorial facility, a high level of energy and responsibility, and a sense of humor will be highly valued in the selection process.

Travel (up to eight weeks per year), evening, weekend hours, and a valid driver's license are required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.



Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (as in typical office or administrative work).

Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm with occasional evening and weekend hours required. Travel is required.
